I would like to strip a Sunset Diesel locomotive to use as a starting point for a N&W project. Has anyone stripped one and what did you use? Any suggestions?

I dunked my F7 pilots in paint thinner and the paint came right off. But his are brass parts. Don't know what would work with plastic.
Many plastics will dissolve or warp in paint thinner or lacquer thinner especially. I would be very carefull with it.
What ever you use, test it carefully on a hidden surface.
I have used brake fluid on plastics successfully and I have used nail polish remover. In both cases I rubbed it on and off, I did not dip it.
My suggestion just work on removing the lettering and seam lines where two colors of paint meet until these surfaces are smooth. Then overspray the whole unit with a shade of grey. I have done this on other units and then painted them over the grey and the new color covered well.
You do have to get the lettering removed or it will "ghost" through as shadows because it is usually slightly raised on the surface.
I use Brake fluid with care to not leave it too long, soaking. When the paint starts crumbling, just pull it out, use a toothbrush to remove the goo and then rinse abundantly under warm to hot water.

A friend of mind said to use Pine Sol as it is not as strong. If that doesn't work then try Brake fluid. I will try it to see what happens.

I use Castrol Super Clean in a tub bath. Though the current formula is modified from the original, it still works very well, without danger to the plastic. I soak it for however long it takes to loosen the paint, usually overnight and scrub the rest off.
I use Scalecoat Paint Stripper. Its specifically made to remove paint. Easy to use and safe for plastic.
Another hobby I have is 1/25 scale car/truck models.
To strip the paint off, use the dollar store oven cleaner. Spray the part in a container, seal it, and let is sit overnite. Might need a re-application the next day after washing off the paint. Don't use he environmentally friendly stuff, not strong enough.
I stripped clean a model built in 1968 using this method.

Try 91% IPA. It removes most modern paints. Soak in closed container since fumes are lethal.
