Thanks, Mark.  That is an interesting approach.  At first, I didn't see the point until I realized that they were meant to be used with something like light plaster or other texturing material that will produce depth. Cool. 

 

I'm actually more interested in the brick patterns than stone. Hand carving techniques are arguably superior for random patterns. But for precise, repeating patterns such as brick and cut stone, this could be a very effective technique.

I came across these stone and brick stencils that come in several sizes and styles.  They might work great for the people who have long sections of retaining walls.  I have not used them, but they look intriguing.
