I recently fired up my WM BL2 (PS-3) in preparation for visitors to see the layout. I had not run this engine for several weeks as I was busy in preparations for the holidays etc. On start up the engine was making very loud static sounds and there was garbled talk in the background. The sounds were so  loud that they were annoying. I turned the sound off and let the engine run for several hours. This did not seem to help get rid of the noise. I ran the engine a few more hours that night to no avail.  The next day I fired the BLT2 up again and everything was normal. Sounds were as they should be and the engine  runs great.

Has anyone else seen this problem. Does anyone have an explanation. Is this a warning of bad things to come?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Yes I have had that same problem with my new AC4400 cw Norfolk Southern engines #4002 & 4004. Started them up and had that loud staticky sound. Shut them down and restarted and they ran fine.  I have only run each one once so far but it happened to both engines. After the restart probably ran each engine about 15 minuets and all was good.

I'm not an MTH expert, but I do have some PS2/3 here and there, and have found that they will occasionally need a re-boot (they are little computers, after all). I have had an MTH loco or two experience a transitory derailment, then sit and start making noises like one of the old Daffy Duck cartoons (kind of a version of yadda-yadda-yadda-...really) until I reboot it.

My Lionel electronics are not nearly as entertaining. Thankfully.

I installed a PS3 board into an engine and swapped the sound files and the chain files. After the first cycle of power changing the sounds, the volume went thru the roof when I pressed shut down. I then changed the chain files and the board made the reset beeping sounds when I cycled power the first time.

Since then, everything has been fine. So maybe there's some type of reset that has to take place? I can only suggest after reading your posts that cycling the power seems to be the answer. Why the board resets in your case(s), I'm not sure? Was the engine run much? Long times in between runs? First time power was applied?

BTW, I am not a tech, I just play with these!
