Back in January I mentioned that I finally had all my track down and wiring done and was running some new engines that had waited years to come out of their box.  One was a 6-11903 ACL F3 A-B-A of which I said, "Last test for the day was a Lionel Atlantic Coast Line F3 A-B-A. Still brand new but "waiting " since 1996 I think! Like most diesels with their wide pickup spacing, it sailed through everything without a hitch."  (I was looking for places where pickup roller spacing might cause trouble.)  I did not have my Cab/Base 1L yet, so was operating in Conventional mode.  This beauty ran well.

Flash forward to the present and the attempt to run this loco in Command.  Problem is it wouldn't.  With the engine Run/Program switch in Run and the ZW-L in Command, the headlight comes on when the voltage is turned up to 18 with the Cab 1-L and it's Eng #1 ID is punched in.  The B unit sounds work, but those two A unit Pullmor motors just sit there.  In fooling around to try and determine the source of the problem I decided to change the engines ID number.  Long story short, before I changed it, I found out when the Run/Program switch is set to Program per the picture in the owner's manual (switch isn't marked on the bottom of the engine), the darn think operates properly. So I thought perhaps the Run/Program switch was installed backwards or the drawing in the owner's manual was incorrect.  But then realized if that was the case, how did it work properly earlier in Conventional mode with the engine switch in the Run (other) position??  The other interesting thing is that now it will not budge with the ZW-L in Conventional mode, with the engine switch in either position!

Any ideas?  I am baffled. Thanks,

Bucky

I programmed the B unit to change the factory ID from #1 to #42.  All went well.  Then tried to do the same with the A unit.  The light did blink like it was supposed to, but only after I put the Program/Run switch in the the Run position while going through the programming steps.  Then after moving the switch to the Program position, the unit ran properly in Command mode.  The switch just has to be reversed or the picture in the manual is wrong.

Interesting thing was, now with the transformer set to Conventional and the engine switch set on Program, Conventional mode works like it should also.  Not sure why Conventional mode now works, but am glad it does, not that I will use it that way.

Thanks, John!  This A-B-A set was produced in 1996. That is the newest Lionel I have with a Pulmor motor and, as everyone has experienced, in conventional mode it runs "rough" with the ZW-L's chopped sine wave just like my post war stuff does.  Do you know if the same is true with newer production with open frame motors?

The switch is probably just in backwards, easy to fix.  I've seen this more than once.

I actually have very little experience with Pulmor motored stuff, other than to fix them.  I have a couple of the little TMCC switchers, the Lionel O Gauge 42 Picatinny Arsenal Switcher and the MS&L Switcher.  I also have the original Phantom set that has the AC motor.

Everything else I have is DC motors most with cruise control.  They run fine in command mode.
