Thanks Ed, that sums it up very nicely.

I always say too each their own.

I personally have no interest in the 3' high triple rails, 5 degree curve high speed cornering, however it sure doesn't mean you can't fine scale detail everything else.

Just remember P-48 modelers can make fun of O5W just the same as 2 railers make fun of high railers. Those "scale wheel sets" 2 rail guys use are huge!

Good points being stated here by both parties. I hope this thread Doesn't get deleted.imageimage

My dream is all of this will one day become one unified correct scale like HO, N etc. it's all over the place like G and scares off a lot of potential newbies.

This is a very misleading photograph used by protocraft to over dramatize the difference

Between NMRA O scale and proto48. The NMRA O scale is truck has wheels to the old

Standard that uses .172 wide wheel treads. The new NMRA O scale wheel with is .145 making

The difference between proto48 not as dramatic.  Also there is no such standard as “OW5” and

No place to look for the definition.

The track gauge difference is still pretty dramatic.  That, to me, is the biggest problem with O Scale, and why I model in 17/64.

I find myself in disagreement with Stephen all the time, but do not see anything "not nice" about it.  This is a very reasonable discussion with not very divergent opinions.

Opinion.

As an aside, when I tell non-O scale folks that I do O scale, they almost always automatically think Lionel 3R.  I almost always have to explain that I do 2R and then their anti-Oscale attitude usually disappears.  If it doesn't disappear, the next question usually is...who actually makes 2R O scale? Does it have DCC? etc. Always a fun game.

Dave,

I am with you. My answer to non train people is that I do O gauge trains. They generally ask "you mean like Lionel?" My answer to that is "yes." Saves further explanation.

Man, the most comments I've ever stirred up on a post. I apologize for hijacking the topic.  Seems to have really struck a nerve.  But it's been fun reading the responses.

Oh well, nothings changing for me.  I'll continue to flip back and forth between the two sub-forums ----while hanging out with my 2 rail, 3 rail buddies and those of "mixed interests."   And I even know a guy who reportedly is into HO.  But, we're not sure about him.

jd-train: You are sooooooo wrong. A lot more differences than roller thingies and flanges and third rail. Swivel pilots, foobie paint schemes, cartoon models, toy details, oversized couplers, smoke in everything with wheels, wrong sound bites, and large models on sharp curved track and more. If 3-railers want scale, let them try 2-rail SCALE, and get rid of the overpriced joke of 3-rail as most of the world modeling community perceives. That is why 3-rail is called gauge and not SCALE. You can say there is 3-rail scale, but it will always be 3-rail!  Face it, the general modeling community from Z scale and up, 3-railers are a different bred. If you like 3-rail, then by all means enjoy. Stephen

I might be dense, but I just don't get it

The topic of this thread was the announcement of the Sunset E8/E9.  I'll have to go back to 3rd Rail's website as I missed the announcement of the 3rd Rail E8/9's with foobie paint schemes, cartoon models, toy details, smoke in everything with wheels, and the wrong sound bites!

Maybe you don't know this, or just don't care, but the 3RS is a separate sub-forum from the Hi-Rail, O27 and Traditional 3-Rail O Gauge sub-forum.
