Is there something wrong with Jeff's? They look the same as your set? The chrome bezel around the headlight needs attention but out the box they look fantastic.

The difference is like night to day. Keep looking closely at the 2 photos. they are not the same.

Regarding the color, I've seen the red used on the Sunset FT's photograph differently depending on the picture.  It is a very good choice of red.  It's not dull in the least and is a good match for the best prototypical Warbonnet photos I've seen.  I hope they use the same red for the F7's.

Nice work Scott on a fine model (the plastic FT topic of this thread) I like the sunset windshield sculpt.

Your photo is a small file size -pixelated and without seeing the detail I guessed they were "got mine today" I assumed they were sunset. Hahah ;-P

Key Model Import's FT's are still a month out. Inspections are next week in Korea. They far exceed OMI and the Sunset pieces.

For the money I feel the sunset FT's are easily the best in the market today.

I agree.  They just need a few tweeks.  My first was painting the front coupler silver on the passenger units, because it was a no brainer.  Ladders, drawbars, etc. next.  

 

I'm thrilled with these units.  I can't wait to start using DCC.  Austin Bill provided some great insight into the DCC process.  Using conventional DC, I'm very pleased.  Much better than the Atlas F's I have.  

For the record Scott did not do these models. Erik gets the prize for knowing what they were. Yes they are OMI imports.
 
These models were done By Bill Basden of Delta Models about 7 years ago.
they have painted lighted cab interiors--lighted side panels and detail changes that pertain to 161.
 
Models are owned by Tim Bartols.

For the record I should have been more clear. I was complimenting Scott on building an out of the box plastic ready to roll model that clearly holds its own in comparison to a hand finished pro-paint brass import that easily cost you 3 times what Scott's model cost these guys. A tough thing to stomach.

All opinion---

This dynamic of plastic release destroying the brass market is no stranger to other scales. N brass has all but evaporated due to Kato and the like.

I am pro-brass you know this about me. But I'm also pro-correct model made of resin, brass, plastic, abs, or whatever you want to call it. It makes no difference to me.

Sunset is changing the 1/48 scale market. Your OMI custom finished model is likely one of a very few that will hold its value because of its professional talent finish and care to authenticity and detail; meanwhile the non-paint and custom paint and painted crowd out there will likely dwindle- $500-$600 range per unit and even lower once the Key Model Imports pieces get here next month. Frankly I'm concerned for the future value of these models despite the intense nature of quality these will possess. The market just will not support it with much lower cost alternatives available to the buyer.

I love your model it's wonderful. Truly an exemplary piece worthy of any collectors prize or ATSF buff. The Atlas CZ is another example of a possible ouch--. Just look what happened to the Challenger Imports CZ; once a $5000-$7000 set now reduced to a $2400 set because of Broadway Limited's BLI plated CZ in plastic.  

Step aside all this and we will still find that one buyer or two that wants and demands the absolute best of the best no matter the cost. I sympathize with this buyer he or she is a aficionado and loves every detail- Every detail no matter how small.

Well said, Erik!!!  A thoughtful assessment of the present and projected market dynamics..

 

For me anyway --- Scott occupies the "sweet spot" in the middle between the two extremes with appropriate detail and correctness and excellent performance right out of the box and at competitive price. 

 

But, to each his own. It's the best of times in O Scale IMO.  Lotsa choices.  Something for everybody these days.

And to think I grew up in Calif. and visiting San Bernadino I would go out to the tracks under an overpass and watch Santa FEs coming and going to cajon pass. Loved the SD24s but was always impressed with the red bonnet. Gawd awful beautiful. I just don't know what happened as I ended up modeling the UP. I guess it was the BIG power they used vs many engines hooked together as both companies ran on the same tracks. I could see some SF hook ups 10 or 15 engines being moved down the hill. But must say these new models are stunning and those able to buy them very lucky.

There are still a few Warbonnet sets available and a lot of late SF freight.  But zero early ATSF freight.  Seems a number of the clueless types got their late freight models and went "this is wrong, blah, blah, blah" and complained to Scott who replaced them with the early units; until he ran out.

 

You can lead a horse to water but...
