Right now a one.
Carpet layout =1, precise scale 2 - rail = 10,
That seems to put me at "3" possibly a "4" when everything is finished.

I would say mine rates about a 3.14159 . . . as I really prefer desserts rather than rankings.

Maybe I didn't write the thread clearly enough.
A carpet central can be a ten, if you think it's the best carpet central around. Same with Marx, 50's Lionel, American Flyer or what ever.
Alex, in reality I think your layout is a 3.14160 no way it's a 3.14159. Don
To my grandchildren, other family members and friends a 10. After running 8 lines per telephone pole (50+) I give myself a 7.
Don . . . .
I interpreted your 1 to 10 rating to be roughly a scale of the level of realism (true to real world, or "scale" as some would say) of one's trainworld - not the owner's satisfaction with what he operates or collects. If in fact this is a personal satisfaction rating, my railroad empire is a "10" to me.
At any rate, this has generated some interesting reading.

Hmm...maybe a 5.
- Mike
Since mine is on top of the bar built into my basement, it isn't on the carpet. There isn't much more than tracks and a couple of buildings so I guess it would be a 2 on the hi-rail scale, just above being plain tracks on the floor, but not by much.
I gotta say 2.0. It is on a 6x11 platform, but everytime I think I want to go do some scenicking, I end up running trains instead. I have fun with it though.
Perhaps a 5 for my current layout in progress.
Mine could not rate above a 2 or 3 at the present time, but at least it has trains running and a track plan that is close to something I can live with (close, but not really 100% acceptable). It will never attain a rank above 5 or 6 in my mind because I'm never completely happy with the results I achieve in layout building and am always striving to do more and to do it better. About the last time I was close to being satisfied was with a tiny 4x6 that was the first O27 Lionel layout I built, in Hawaii, when I got back into this segment of the hobby. Came out pretty darn good--complete with scenery, tunnel, operating accessories, etc.

I would say 5 or 6 at this time ,I have tons of scenery left .
Either way you read it, I'm at a 3. Crappy basement layout, very little scenery.
And I'm trying to accumulate the new benchwork & track to raise it substantially.
Got at least half the track, concentrating on wood for benchwork now.
probably a 3
I would say a 5 since I like scale scenery but I have only enough space for engines that can handle O31 curves. I do have some scale freight cars that mix well with some semi scale freight cars.
I'm having trouble with a number. Scale and semi-scale equipment in a "realistic" environment. Lionel accessories too. Does a 5 sound right?

I have no idea layout is in basement 30 x 14

Don, I'm going to say mine is a .5 at the moment. I have some FasTrack with a few switches on a 10' by 18" shelf in the garage at the moment. I aligator clip power to the track from the TIU. Just about everything is in boxes right now. When my grandson spends some time with us, we set up a Garage Floor Central layout, take a few engines and a couple dozen cars out of the boxes. He has more fun setting it than actually the running trains.

Peter sounds good to me. It's your call. Don
I'd say mine is a 5 or 6.
-2
Ya stole my answer although probably should be more like -5 for me. Just when I was ready to start laying track, I decided to switch to another track system! Still selling off the FasTrack. It's gotta get-gone before I start buying again.
Gilly
my christmas layout is 4-5, if I go the extra mile on detail and scenery 6-7 for a 4x8 or 4x12.
Don,
I understand where you're trying to go with this thread. I'll have to give myself a healthy number one. Please, allow me to explain. My layout is 100% prewar.
(I grew up with 'old money', and so I still think in twelves, not tens. )
I never had any money long enough for it to get "olde"!

Oh, well in that case I would say mine is about a 6, going for a 7 when I get the next round of projects done.
Past: 5
Present: 0 (nothing currently built)
Future: 10 (in my mind)
What are you going to do with this information once you get it? Are you going to publish a report? If so, I hope you will explain what it all means. Frankly, I do not understand the purpose of this survey.
Nothing sinister at all. Just curious about what people thought of their layout and what level they were at. I know I started out with about a one when I got back into the hobby and I think I'm about a seven at the present time. Don

2 - have some old plywood scraps cobbled together on saw horses about 5x6 or 7, while trying to finalize layout plans. Getting close! Only reason it's 2 is because it's about 36" above the floor and I don't have to bend or squat to get to it!
Currently about a 6 hoping to reach at least an 8.

I'm giving myself a 5 and I don't really have a layout. I have a Double Modular Helix and I don't recall anyone else having a modular helix. Mine is designed to be broken down and transported. I just posted a video of it. Play value, it's off the charts, for me anyway.

Lets see.. I'll take a point for each layout, take a point off for every carpet layout, add a half point for each elevated one and multi track, subtract one for running a lot of junk, Add two cause it all works. Subtract 4 for breaking Pyro toys. Add one because Ive owned most since I was a kid and kit bashed them back to life. Hey Im number one.....Oh wait, multi track ceiling shelf layout gets me four...operating accessories,.. 5 rocket launchers, pw gantry and pad on the floor, target ca.. and... oh no I was taught this madness by my Grandfather.
Rats! 11-Looks like I lose! ....or was it one?..or is it won?... Hold on I got some beauty in my eye
Well, right now still working to finalize the track plan for the allotted space, and then I can start on the benchwork. So, let's call it a 1.2818!
I have seen a lot of layouts. I find it pretty amusing to see what everybody rates their layout at. I would think the only one to be able rate a layout is a visitor to it not the owner. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Seems that some people that say their layout is an 8 really own a 2 and some people that say a 2 really have an eight. Thread should be what do people rate your layout at.
