Good Morning Switcher Saturday crew.  The weather outside may  be frightful, but our trains can be delightful!

Here on Switcher Saturday we celebrate Switcher locomotives of all sizes, scales and gauges.

Here we have my 30 year young new to me R.O.W. saddle tanker,  spotting a transformer delivery.

Please share a Switcher locomotive picture, video or story here and have a great weekend everyone!

Happy Swsat,                                                                                                                      A recent discussion with a forum friend included a “Do you run lengthy trains on your layout?” topic.

My response was that I generally do not.  Since this is switcher Saturday, why not give it a try with my workhorse diesel, a pre-Bachman Williams Gp9.  Here it is with a mixture of modern and postwar cars.  Not bad considering the curves are O-42.

Happy SWSat!

WM # 23 (Lionel GP-7 w/ legacy), waiting on a spur for the main to clear. In the background the crew on the MP-15 (K-line) has a green light and are heading out for a days switching duties.

Everyone have a great weekend. I mentioned yesterday that the weather forecast for much of the country looks very "layout friendly"

Yay! SWSat is on track!

Off to a great start as usual this week. I have been going through my phone so I have some oldies that I am fairly sure I have not posted.

First up is one half of the entire roster of the Raquette Lake Transportation Company. They were a just under one mile long Standard Gauge Adirondacks Railroad that connected two lakes and their tourist transporting boats. They had this Porter 0-4-0ST and three Ex-Brooklyn horse cars. These two survivors are in the Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, NY.

Next up some LV Pups on the NYSME O gauge layout.

Pulling up the rear are some NYMTA GE led work trains close to my home on the Manhattanville Viaduct. These are on the 1 train between 125 and 135th St. In the back you can see Riverside Church and all of the new Columbia University construction. Hold on to that cell phone and the handrail there guy.

Have a great weekend everyone. I cannot wait to see what you post.

TALES OF THE DOCKSIDER

Good morning SWSAT fans!  It has been a few weeks since foreign power has invaded the Worcester yards, but you know it was going to happen sooner or later!

This Saturday it’s a magnificent example of PRR steam engineering, 4-4-2 Atlantic no. 1600.  These large and powerful Atlantics were said to be the equivalent of light Pacifics on other roads.  1600 has stalled due to a lack of steam pressure from an unknown malady.

NYC shop switcher X-8688, as usual, has been dispatched to tow 1600 to the B&A roundhouse.  A casual observer might think the Docksider might have trouble moving the massive Atlantic, but we know she will handle this task with ease!

@coach joe posted:

Andy, Are you back to walking around the neighborhood or is that work train from the archives? Are those 3 hoppers at the end of the work train?

Joe it looks like these are old pictures from my phone. In June 2019 the MTA was relaying track on the 1 line. They had a big crane to lift and drop panel track and switches. They were doing much of it on the weekends but they had hundreds of trackworkers and lines of work trains for quick work.

145 St is my home station. So I wasn't walking very far. 145 St  was the original terminus station on opening day when the Subway line first opened October 27, 1904.  A month later it had pushed further north so that terminal status did not last long. They are refurbishing the station right now but there are some areas of the original white glass subway tiles.

I have more pictures but the switch replacement was quite a scene.

Adding some pics. The work went on for a month and it looks like I was there every weekend.

That first hopper next to the rider car was  brand new maybe on its first job. You could practically still smell the paint.

These were taken from the 135 St tunnel mouth. One is even from across 135 St. was fun to follow all the activity. Lots of neighbors out watching.

Good morning fellow switcher fans!!  Great videos, pics, and info everyone!  Thanks JHZ for getting us rolling this morning.  Love your saddle tank ( is that a Docksider? )

New on the property this week is my new MTH RailKing Washington Terminal RS1.  I ordered this locomotive from an OGR Forum sponsor  back in April.   I'm really loving this locomotive!!  It runs great, has smoke, and looks fantastic!   I'm so grateful that MTH produced this locomotive in WTC livery before closing up shop this coming May.

I used to see the prototype number 46 working the Amtrak Ivy City engine terminal  in Washington DC during my almost daily travels on New York Ave. in and out of DC.   Washington Terminal Co. parent companies were the B&O and Pennsylvania who jointly built Union Station.  Those two railroads set up the Washington Terminal Co. to operate Union Station its coach yards and locomotive servicing facility. The WTC also served some industries in the immediate vicinity of Union Station.  Originally Union Station, pre Amtrak,  served 7 railroads .... Atlantic Coast Line, B&O, C&O, Pennsylvania, Richmond Fredricksburg and Potomac, Southern, and Seaboard Air Line.  WTC owned several RS1 locos which lasted and served well  into the Amtrak era.  Once under  Amtrak ownership they were  painted  in Amtrak colors.

A head’s up  to those of you who haven’t yet heard the news, but this week MTH unexpectedly (to me) announced a final run of RailKing RS-3s for summer delivery. Since many of us run these beauties, I thought it appropriate to mention here. Check the MTH website where they are displayed (four in all, I believe).

I have ordered the Northern Pacific version already.

Was that 19 cars I counted?  Very impressive.

DSC01827Just finished the mechanicals of

an MTH Baldwin AS-16 using an MTH AS-616 body,  MTH Alco RS-27 running gear, and a .050 in. sheet brass chassis.

Any resemblance to the real B&O 904 is purely coincidental. ( I'll have to look for a hood mounted bell )

Related old post about AS-16 conversions.

Bell purchased, mount fabricated from sectioned square brass tubing.  Shorter screws and B&O blue paint on order.
