Hmmm. Dilemma: Do ROAD switchers count?  Fine line perhaps, but I think since they were technically used as switchers all across the rail system, then yes?

 

As we ponder such a hefty point, I will offer a road switcher pic from my previous proto-lanced HO scale KC&G layout for this week's SWSAT:

 

('Ya know, one of these days I gotta' get a layout far enough along again to actually have some scenery on it. Sigh... all in good time, I suppose.)

 

  

There were small roads that bought nothing but switchers. More power, more switcher units.

Pittsburg and Shawmut was know to use (5) SW units for their long haul, which was no more than 80 miles.  Montour RR the same.

 

The Montour was awesome.

You might draw the line for road switchers.  One power plant (may be 1500 Hp. or less) and two axle trucks.  2nd Power plant, units get pretty big IMO.  I watched a train being put-together, Missoula, MT, with some pretty hefty power, and away they went.  I believe (3) back-and forth movements.  Montana Rail Link in this yard was smaller SD-40's

  

Here's mine.  A 621 from 1956, the year I was born.  It gets around better than I do.  ;-)

Thanks for noticing. I do really enjoy Switcher Saturday. Partly because I enjoy switch engines but probably more because I live in a place where the only space I have for a layout is most suitable to switching than mainline trains. I have gone though all of My switch engines and have started to repeat. Now I have incentive to catch up on some projects to have more to show. I like passenger/commuter service but my space is really probably better for N scale than O.

Imagine an around the wall O-31 curves and that is the size space I'm working with. Manhattan Apartments....
This is why the backgrounds of my pictures are always the same. I do have a drop in that I can use to make a full loop but I usually don't use it so it ends up as a default switch layout.

Clearly I enjoy the smaller switchers too.  Most of my pics are done on my workbench in my basement.  I also have a small tabletop layout and an old wooden door layout I take out and use once in a while.

 

Speaking of repeats, I'll give you one more picture of my new dockside switcher - just for kicks...  I promise this is the last one I'll post today!

Rich, thanks for thinking of this topic and starting the thread every week. 

 

I've posted photos of most of the switchers I own - both O and G gauge. (I think I have one or two more in storage) I may have to expand my switcher collection just so I can keep posting here!

 

Here's something different - based on a switcher. It's the LGB Track Cleaning engine. It runs like a champ and eliminates the backbreaking work of track cleaning by hand. Run in one direction, a special set of wheels with abrasive material spin counter clockwise, buffing and cleaning the track. The speed can be controlled by a dial on the roof of the cab.  Reverse the direction and it runs like a normal locomotive.
