It's Switcher Saturday Time!!!!

Lots of us out there love switchers (shifters, docksiders, yard goats, critters, etc.), so lets keep #SwitcherSaturday (a.k.a. SWSAT) rolling!

If you missed last week's SWSAT, you should go take a look, it was lots of fun!
https://ogrforum.com/...day-2018-november-03

My picture this week is of the "module" I'm working on for my train club, with a switcher on it of course.
It's just about ready but didn't get ready in time for the train club to use it this weekend at the local mall (running all weekend at the Towne Centre Mall in Spotsylvania County Virginia).  We have a Christmas show coming up in early December, I'm hoping maybe it makes it debut then.  The six buildings in the back are "Mainline by K-Line/Lemax" and I picked them up at a yard sale earlier this year, they seem to go very well on this little layout.  The station platform is Dept 56, as are the trees.

I hope everyone has a great weekend, have some switcher fun and when you get a chance - please post some switcher stuff here!

All the best...Rich Murnane

p.s. Miss the post on Saturday? NO BIG DEAL, just keep posting pictures of your favorites until the next #SwitcherSaturday

British steam today with a small  0-4-4 loco tender made by LEEDS in Great Britain from 1935 to 1959 in three rails O gauge. It models the Adams T1 of 0-4-4T locomotive which was introduced in June 1888. Those models where retired just before the second world war and unfortunately none of them has been preserved.

Yay SWSat is on!

Rich Did you fit any switches onto that module? Last week I got a handfull of switches at the METCA/NYSME swap meet to make a new timesaver type micro so some new layout pics are forthcoming. I was really torn last week between going to the Finescale Scenic Meet in Albany to take classes and clinics, the Mass Transit Modelers meet in Parsipanny and the METCA/NYSME swap meet. All of which were scheduled on the same day were Public Tranisit Accessable (I don’t have a car. I live in Manhattan) and all I was interested in. All determining factors for me.

Oh well. I got a call the night before asking for set up/Tear down help that helped make up my mind. I kind of regret not going to the Finescale show hopefully next time there is no conflict. Got some more projects to work on. One guy was selling 2 rail O scale cars with trucks and Kaydees @3 for $20. Can’t beat that. I got a nice Wagontop B&O car to refurbish.

This week I have a few pics of some very small logging switchers dripping with character. I think this may be some of my favorite types of engines. The wenches added to the beams make them seem kind of like off-road Jeeps. The Falk#1 the Gypsey and the Oregon Pony. Fun stuff.

Very nice work on the module Rich-  please share more pix of the whole layout when you are done.

This week the venerable ALCO FA is pulling a short freight on the RSJ&B. These PRR units by K-line recently arrived and just came out of the shops for road testing. Further maintenance is required on the powered unit but it is running for now.

The ALCO FA was a family of B-B diesel locomotives designed to haul freight trains. The locomotives were built by a partnership of ALCO and General Electric in Schenectady, New York, between January 1946 and May 1959. They were of a cab unit design, and both cab-equipped lead (A unit) FA and cabless booster (B unit) FB models were built. A dual passenger-freight version, the FPA/FPB, was also offered. It was equipped with a steam generator for heating passenger cars. (Lots more info here)

Happy Switcher Saturday everyone!

If you are a veteran, with Veteran's Day approaching, Happy Veteran's Day and thank you for your service.

It's also the 100-Year Anniversary of the end of World War I. My dad served before World War II, through the war and served in the National Guard before getting out around 1980. Some of his pictures, taken right after the Pearl Harbor attack, made it into this piece by fellow Forum member David Vergun. If you can expand the photos, you'll see the captions.

My contribution is one of my Lionel Pennsy steam switchers, #227, which first appeared in 1939, before we officially entered WWII.

Good morning fellow switcher lovers!!  The sun always shines on Switcher Staturday!!  And so it is here in Maryland too!   The

Great photos and info everyone  I always learn so much from what you guys post on this thread.  Rich you module look great!!  I hope you get it completed in time for your clubs Christmas show.  It will be a fine addition to their layout!

Whew!  Walked into to the train room last night at 11 p.m. camera in hand.  Thought perhaps only an hour had lapsed before glancing at the clock and much to my surprise it was 1:30 a.m.!!  Oh well, I was having BIG fun!!

Here are some photos of my C&O  0-8-0, taking on water, and  backing into the hole to clear the main for a N&W J class at the point of a fast freight.  Also lurking in the background, in the first photos looking down Patsburg Ave., is a B&O SW9.  Later, the head end brakeman takes the porch to give the J and her train a roll by inspection.   This SW9 is a MTH RailKing Scale model ( PS2 ) and it is my most reliable locomotive.  The 0-8-0 is a Lionel which I bought at a 33 percent off sale over 10 years ago.. wow that long ago The J is a 2005 Lionel which I acquired new in a trade.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!! IMG_8229IMG_8236IMG_8283IMG_8264IMG_8265IMG_8280IMG_8274IMG_8278IMG_8275IMG_8276IMG_8331IMG_8334IMG_8336IMG_8256IMG_8258IMG_8259IMG_8339IMG_8340IMG_8338IMG_8342IMG_8364IMG_8366IMG_8368IMG_8353

Always a pleasure looking at the efforts of this talented group. I like color so snapped this picture on the top of my stove using bits and pieces of my layout. My son continues his training with the Union Pacific. His last five weeks are being spent putting trains together in the Roseville yard. Marty has told me that in all phases of training the different men and women of the UP have been friendly and helpful.

Hey Andy, no switches installed on the 2' x 4' module, just straight up 2 mainlines and some scenery, which I've done more "cute" than "realistic", I hope the folks at the club like it.  I hope you had a good day with the club, I'm volunteering all day today at the mall, should be a longggg day.  Great little logging steamers too!

Hey Tom, you're very welcome for starting things up, though I'll probably need some help here in the coming months with the holidays, I'll reach out your way of course and try to let you know beforehand!  I'm bookmarking that link and will read through it this week, I'm sure I speak for everyone here when saying "we're very appreciative of your Dad's service".  Your #227 looks good, I'm still waiting to see one of these running somewhere at one of these shows, somebody that runs trains in the public must run them somewhere!

Great find Brian!   My guess as to the odd looking objects on the exhaust stacks is they may be some sort of spark arrestors to help guard against grass fires.  I assume this photo is taken at or near the Nevada Northern Museum in Ely, NV.  I've been to Ely several times, playing concerts with my chamber music group,  and of course it is quite arid there with lots of grass ( as in the photo ) beside the tracks. It would not take much ignition to start a grass fire.   Just my guess at what those " pipe organ " things might be.

I've seen photos of end cab switchers with spark arrestors on their stacks, however, those arrestors were of a different shape.
