Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Switcher Saturday, the thread where all the bonus points are made up, and the gauge doesn't matter.  (sorry folks, I was watching whose line is it anyway and just couldn't help myself)

Back to business.... Switcher Saturday is a weekly thread were we celebrate Switching Locomotives of all kinds, regardless of make, scale, gauge, motive source etc.  All locomotives used specifically to kick the cars, switch the yard, work the local, or make the tight turns at the docks are welcome here.  While there is an obvious heavy helping of 3 rail O gauge, this thread has always been open to everything from Hongz thru 12" to the foot.  If you like road switchers, docksiders, transfer diesels, Plymouths, Alco's Baldwins Geeps, Porters, steeple cabs etc., then this is the thread for you.

Last week we had a very successful tribute to @MTH, and since then some great news came out.  This timing is purely coincidental.  With MTH as we know it  is shutting down, there are several special run loco's coming out in a last chance blitz from MTH, sponsored by various hobby shops.  One of those shops is forum sponsor @PATSTRAINS, who is sponsoring a group of SW-1500 diesels.  When I saw the latest announcement, I realized Pat might have just as easily reached through the screen and taken the money right out of my wallet.  The machine that caught my attention was the PP&L SW1500.  30-20829-1

I don't generally highlight models for sale, as this is a thread to celebrate all switchers, not advertisements, so why, oh why do I bring this up?  Well the prototype for this loco is usually parked about 1000 steps from my desk.  The real engine spent many years in working for PPL in Coalstrip Montana, inspiring the stylized mountain paint scheme.  But now it is at my plant in south central PA.  So when the promo showed up on my screen, I had to get some pictures.  She's recently been splashed by scrubber slurry so please excuse the mess.

I actually have more pictures of the inside of the cab, but I left them at work - I guess you'll have to what til Monday for those!  You eagle-eyed switcher fans may have noticed a few things are a little different than as delivered spec, so I will bring them up.

First the very obvious extra lights on the side of the cab.  Those colored lights are related to remote control operation.  That's right - its a big toy remote control train!  The lights have to do with indications of the locomotive being in remote control mode and what direction it might move next.

Then take a look at the coupler cut levers. There is an air cylinder set up to work the cut levers.  Yup, proto-couplers eat your heart out.

The engine is also hooked up with a circulation system that keeps the block warm with umbilical power.

Then look on top.  There's some type of aftermarket bulbous box on the hood and a single flapper exhaust. And of course - horns.  There is about 700 horns mounted on top of the cab.  I am pretty sure they all work.

Like I said earlier, I will post pictures of the cab interior next week.

No specific theme this week, but I suppose bonus points to anyone who has a SW1500 to show off.

Remember that everyone plays nice and everyone abides by the OGR tos regarding pictures.

Thanks folks, and everyone have a great weekend!

Happy SWSat!

Great pix JHZ. I think I'd walk the money right over to Pat's immediately. About the same as I'm going to do for the final RS-3 that MTH is producing in the LIRR livery. Trainworld has that one for sale and I'm about 15 min from their Lynbrook location.

Well I don't have a 1500 but I do have a 8/9 in PC/ Despatch Shops, so here goes. This is an MTH PS engine.
Another one of the unique offerings from MTH.

Go for it, JHZ. If you own any PPL stock, that nice price movement this week when they announced the sale of their British holdings to NGG should pay for the train quite easily! I don’t have an SW1500, but I do have a 20 year old NW-2, which looks close enough. My little MTA beauty has over 4000 scale miles on the odometer and over close to 400 hours on the chronometer. This is notwithstanding the fact that it has a dreaded ps2 5 volt board. All that I’ve changed is the speaker and put in a bcr. It just keeps reliably running and running and is a regular operator on my layout. Here she is doing some yard switching this morning  :

Good morning fellow switcher fans!   Great pics and videos everyone!  JHZ go for that SW1500... after all it has your name on it!   Today the FSJR photographer has been out and about the system snapping photos of 44 tonners, SW1, A5, and an 0-8-0.  All doing their various switcher chores.

Well guys I am getting a bit behind the power curve here...last week No MTH switchers and this week no NW-2,3....X engines either.  So here goes I will try and keep up with my KLine Alco S-2 switcher.  She was purchased quite a few years ago when KLine was at its prime.  She sat in her box, lost in storage until I "found" her looking for something else quite recently.  KLine made a good product, she has two motors, full illumination, 3 position reverse, and automatic couplers on both ends.  She is one of the smoothest engines I have .

Here she is about to make everyone in Small Town late for work as she blocks the primary intersection right in the middle of town.  Well, at least the kids at McDonald's will have a train to watch.  She is taking the morning express from Savannah up to Macon for all those folks having "city" business.

Alco S-2 Switcher 1

Here is a short video of her pulling out with the express this morning.

jhz563 those are great prototype pictures, what a great coincidence at having the real engine and seeing the MTH ad at the same time. Jessie ferguson that Family Lines NW-2 is about the most detailed engine I have seen, I am so used to Lionel's fat end rails etc that I find the detail really nice. Lee - the UP RS-3 is a great addition and really neat looking.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.  Sunny and cool (50's) here in Central Texas

Kline Alco S-2 Video

Looking great everyone.   Just to clarify,  I did preorder one, now I just have to tell the CFO!!

Actually Mrs. Z is a pretty good egg so I think with a little extra budget for her replacement cell phone and it should be all good.

Actually I shared my pictures with Pat too for some last chance color and detail refinements.  I can't wait to see the final product this summer.

Another fun Saturday at Mr McErlean’s Hobby Shop nice video Don

Well, Saturday’s roll around so briskly, and Don McErlean, my hero and tutor in making the short railroad flicks, here’s another attempt at taking the Ford switcher getting ready to roll. I need a lot of practice. Trumptrain, that’s a cool Canton switcher, Don Winslow, now you’ve taken Don McErlean’s place with an oldie but a goodie, beautiful steamer,  Tom Densel, cool video and I love that caboose, wow. Most enjoyable posts today as always! Hope to get some switcher pics up soon. Right now I have a 4-6-2 steamer on the track. Here is an aerial view of my tiny 4x8 layout anyway. I newly reconfigured the one end (right) to make it less crowded and easier to see the trains. 9266FA3E-EB45-4147-A0F8-07CEAC89B3C72C0C3A44-A685-4756-AB83-8E1DC53B252686976C29-D1AC-435B-B183-043DC3E0FF74

We are actually going to have a TCA meet in Parma this coming Saturday.  Wish you were here.

Thanks for the kind words, Larry! I do what I can with my very limited space. One thing I have zeroed in on recently is evaluating photos of other guys’ layouts to judge just what I like most about them. My conclusion is that I like seeing the trains featured out in the open more than in crowded scenes. The starkest scenes of trains running in plain open space appeal to me. I haven’t the room to make that really work well, but by bifurcating my layout I hoped to leave at least one area more open so I can see the trains more clearly. Of course, each layout has its own charm, so there is no one size fits all. Model what you like given the constraints you are under.

I recently joined a Facebook group for “4x8 and smaller layouts,” and it is excellent and inspiring.  I recommend it highly!

More pictures of PPL 1200 as promised.

Close up of remote.  The antenna goes away from you and the side opposite that goes to your belly. Not sure of the effective range. Biggest challenge is learning not to walk/run after the engine as it goes away from you.
