Hi folks and welcome once again to Switcher Saturday.  For those who might be newly joining us, this is a weekly thread that celebrates the smaller locomotives that do the big work of railroading.  Whether it's road switchers making deliveries, shop critters dragging a behemoth through the paint booth, a multipurpose unit dragging hoppers by night and tourists by day, its all welcome here.

One of the hallmarks of Switcher Saturday is that we are always open to switchers of all scales, gauges, and power sources.  Everything from an N scale juice jack, to a G scale docksider, a 15" gauge industrial unit, or a 12" to the foot diesel is fair game.  Obviously there is typically a heaping helping of 3 rail O gauge.  This thread is open all week but generally kicks off on Saturday mornings.  Everybody plays nice, and everybody follows the OGR tos regarding pictures.

No special theme this week, but I do have a new prize that I want to share.  This is my new ETS tinplate locomotive that I ordered direct from the factory.  It's a mini-mallet that would be comfortable doing switching jobs from the backwoods to the docks.

I will post more through out the day. Please post a picture, video, story, memory etc.  Have a great day and stay safe everyone.

I found a short video that I took at the FWRHS open house in 2019:

I apologize for the poor quality.  I was walking to the event from the parking lot when I saw the train getting ready to move.  I just grabbed my phone and shot...no tripod here. lol.  Do I get any points for shooting it in landscape mode?

Hey that is the engine 126 that I got to drive here at the NCTM years ago.  See they "fixed" the whistle!  I broke it. pulled it over.  Then it was mounted on a long pipe.  So I did not get to blow and/or play it, bummer!

So last night when I was getting ready to launch #SWSAT, I looked at what was on the layout and decided to have some more switcher fun.  All the regular road switchers must have been busy and the dispatcher behind schedule, because for some reason the two critters were assigned to make a coal delivery.

They must have been having a tractive effort problem of some kind because not to much later, this rolled by...

So most of you folks have seen by now that alot of my interest in trains revolves around coal deliveries to power plants.  Since a large part of my professional career has revolved around taking care of the equipment that processes the fuel before going into the boilers, its a natural fit.

Previously I have shared images of this 80 ton center cab as it sits today.

But this week I had the opportunity to find some older pictures and I think you'll like them.

Here is one of the two 80 ton machines spotting some hoppers for unloading.

ppl snip 2

Below is two shots of a hopper that according to the picture caption has electric motors to open the hopper bottom doors.

ppl dixie hopper 2ppl dixie hopper

Apparently it wasn't a hit because really how many electric motor equipped bottom dump hopper have you heard of? The plant now uses all bath tub bottom style hoppers that get dumped by being rotated over.

ppl montour hopper

Also of note was the Montour RR hopper at Brunner Island. Previously I had no idea that the MTR ever sent its equipment south.

The 4 black and white photos here are 8 x 10's in a binder.  I scanned as pdf's at work but couldn't get them to post that way to the forum.  The light bleed onto the images is because I didn't want to take the binder apart and I didn't realize the binder wasn't laying flat.  These images are snippets of the pdf images.  The depth of information in the pdf files that the original was able to capture is just amazing.

I hope you like them.

Hi everyone...WOW what a Satuday.  jhz563 a double headed Plymouth powered coal train with Mallet assist !, an 80 ton / hopper historical post, AND you got us started today...YOU deserve the rest of the day off, Thank you for that effort!.  Tom Densel, great movie.  I wish I knew where the FWRHS was (Fort Worth?) because the movie is really neat, thanks.  Lee - living in Ohio for a number of years, the Indiana Harbor Belt is familiar, great switcher.  RSJB18...OK, I admit to being jealous.  A Kline Box Cab !  In PRR colors !! great engine...I never realized that Kline ever did anything like that.  If your friend knows any others available for sale, please forward my interest.

OK so what am I doing today?  I am sort of in line with tnkMarx with his 588 NYC switcher.  Personally I love these 588 types, they run well, go over my 0-27 switches, look good, and normally don't cost too much.  Today, the scene on the L&S indicates that spring is just around the corner.  Those spring BBQ's are heating up and we have to have the potato's to make the French fries to go with the burgers.   Here is our Marx 112 switcher pulling a car full of potato's headed for the fryers of Small Town.

Marx LV switcher train

Close up of the Marx 112 Lehigh Valley switcher.  This is a bit of an odd duck for Marx.  It is clearly the 588 plastic shell just like the rest of the GE 70 tonner's but this one is DC powered and not by battery but with a DC motor taking power from the tracks.  Too bad really as I like the bright red color and decorative flags but you can't run it with the rest of the fleet.  Someday I may find one to experiment with and try and move the shell to a regular Marx AC drive.  This guy is really a late comer to Marx...made between '74 and '76.  Of course this was after Mr. Marx sold the company to Quaker Oats in 1972 and worse the upcoming end of Marx trains (not toys) in 1975 with the closing of the Gerard , Pa facility.

This certainly qualifies.   Look up the Switcher Saturday post about Brookville Equipment Co., sometimes full size is the feature topic 🙂

Welllllll, first time I looked up a Train Engine number on the internet. I just thought it was a kewl photo for Switcher Saturday. What else can I learn? How did you know it was a Brookville?

I have no idea if Brookville worked on either of those locomotives.   Since you jokingly asked if the pictures qualify, when I answered I just meant that sometimes full size locomotives are a feature topic on Switcher Saturday.   A month or two ago the feature topic of Switcher Saturday was Brookville Equipment Corporation.   We have also had some photos from Republic Locomotive Works.

Thanks Don- I've been on the hunt for one for a while. It's all about the timing. An added bonus was that the seller is a member of the TMB Trainmasters of Babylon club and I met him at the club to pick it up. One of the members had a sweet NYC Niagara passenger train running.

JHZ, you did take it up a few notches!  Your collection is diverse and inclusive, just like this thread!  I love that  ETS engine!  Oh, oh, maybe I need one?

John

Thank you.   Now that I think about it, probably have at least one Williams piece of rolling stock that would fit in with that train and I know there are a couple pieces of Industrial Rail in the basement somewhere that would cover Atlas.  It would be harder to mix in the Marx stuff without building a transition car. There's a few other oddities downstairs too.  I used to think that guys who could forget what was in their collection were just crazy out of control-now I am becoming that guy!
