Thanks for your very interesting comments.  My NYC RS1 is 3 volt PS2 and I’m a conventional operator.  I’m quite surprised to learn the PS2 and PS3 sound sets are different.

The first time I fired up my engine I thought I had a bad board right out of the box!  I also like the subtle “whistle” the motor makes at slow speeds (the turbocharger?).  It reminds me of the Alco S4 the Grafton and Upton RR used to operate near my boyhood home.

John - I have found a PS3 soundset [Milwaukee Road 30-20382-1] which I think is the same as your PS2. Please give it a listen, and confirm. Can’t paste link. Sent to your email. Thanks.

That sure sounds like it, Bob. Is that the soundset that came with the stacker?

No. Since I don't have a TIU, I had to have it programmed by MTH before they shipped it to me. I picked the appropriate file and they loaded it onto the board.

I did a search of Alco diesels on the MTH site and came back with lots of choices.
