Karl, maybe just a small disappointment. The bottom line is that you and your son will be sharing a hobby together. Doesn't really matter what scale it might be, a layout is being built for the two of you to share together. That's what it is all about..........Paul

Karl you never which way they're gonna go but some cool layouts under the tree with smoke and bells and whistles may bring him to 0.

Your are not leaving, just switching scales.  I am primarily an S gauger, but I scan all the topics here for inspiration and ideas.  I have enjoyed your posts relating to wargaming figures and structures along with those concerning Harry Potter and Hogwarts Express and Castle.

If he hasn't already, perhaps your son will become a fan of the Harry Potter movies and books.  Bachmann put out an inexpensive HO Hogwarts Express set before Lionel produced their O gauge version that I bought....for my wife and grandkids of course.  :-)

i may be going to HO myself as well as mush as i love o gauge HO is the more affordable and practical scale for me right now being in college and not having alot of money to spend on trains and being its what i have the most of right now anyway 

and HO is still fun even though not as toy like as my favorite scales O and standard gauge 

yes i'm 22 and love standard gauge

That's true.  I actually have a fair bit of HO stock stashed at my father-in-law's place from when he took a brief interest in railroading and I brought over all my childhood stuff.  Also got a bit here from various resale stuff.

Oh yeah, the kids love HP.  My son seems most interested in modern rolling stock and passenger lines but I'm not above buying a Hogwart's Express if it keeps him interested or draws my daughter into the hobby.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed my HP and wargaming crossover posts. I'll try and occasionally post some of my wargaming structures over here if they have railroad applications.

I have modeled primarily in HO, N and then scale O in that order and there is a lot to love about all of them.  Enjoy your HO endeavor!  I loved it.  Some days I wonder why I went to O, but I don't regret my decisions.  The main part of the hobby is to enjoy it in any way you and your son choose!

 No reason to assume anything other than smaller wheels and some S turn design warnings might be comming that I see.  Newer Atherns ho I've ran are pretty awsome performers, I just never had good luck with many others. Sounds lack some bass from small size speakers, but decent recording quality and speed/brake effects. The ho throttles on many of those DC brush motors feel closer to an open frame AC motor than many can motors anyhow

Besides, You'd loose out on new modeling techniques, we'd loose on on new modeling techniques, etc.; I mean cripes, I just posted a link to ice technique from a pet lizard's tank's background piece because it seems nobody had did that type of ice here and posted, or read to tell us anyhow.

   There is use for every size and style imo....sigh..even metric.

......of coarse course this doesn't let you totally off the hook from some "jr scale" ribbing every now and then  

I model / collect O, S, and HO.   All scales matter.  

I started with a Lionel oval when I was I kid.   Switched to HO when I built my first 4x8' as a preteen.  Even started a HO club in middle school.  Reintroduced to Lionel with a set for my kid in my 30's.  Started my O gauge layout when we moved 15 years ago.  Now in my mid 50's I've lost some sight from Glaucoma so I appreciate O's size, detail and sound.   Though I know I could model Harpers Ferry to scale in HO with the space I have I'm happy with O.
