So the return trip to Joliet will be at 25mph?

Why?
illinoiscentral posted:The video in Rich Melvin's post has a full-length Illinois Central vista dome. I thought no such beast existed. Is the car historically accurate, a paint job because we can do what we want its our car, or do I need new glasses?
I believe it is an ex-ATSF full dome that was purchased by Iowa Pacific and painted into IC colors.

No.
Do you have a planned summer trip to the Cleveland area not counting the CVSR?
OGR Webmaster posted:MJV1988 posted:I wonder if the A-tank will be ready in time or if it's used on the actual trip itself? I also wonder what passenger cars will be used?
Buy a ticket and you can see for yourself, up close and in person.
Haha come on Rich it's a simple question. You know I'm trying to work on getting a ticket. But when you live on the other side of the country airfare isn't cheap unfortunately.
Maybe Ill get some shots with my drone...
Hot Water posted:steam fan posted:So the return trip to Joliet will be at 25mph?

Because the way I read Kelly's post, it's running in reverse at the rear of the train.. Don't think there's a Wye in Joliet.
Indeed, it will be running in reverse, but it's not limited to 25MPH.
Will you ever take the 765 east of Ohio again? I enjoyed my two times behind the 765 but anywhere west of central PA is too far for us. I might ride behind the 2102 on RBMN when it runs again. I rode behind the 611 in Manassas last year.
Zett postedDan do you mind if I share this pic on my facebook page? I think the MW 261 came through Joliet after the Santa Fe but I have trouble finding pictures.
Sure,go ahead.I was right,it was 25 years ago the 3751 passed through Joliet.
The Milwaukee Road 261 engine passed through Joliet in 1998.

Now thats funny. When she was over on the CVSR, Rich said the reverse move was limited to 25mph because of the tracking ability of the rear trailing truck.

Steam locomotives have a speedometer? Have they always had them? How does the sensor/sending unit work?

Explanation please....
Things change.
We thought the 25 mph restriction on reverse running was a design limitation set by the Lima Locomotive Works when these locos were built. Further research revealed we were wrong on this. No such limitation was placed on the locomotive by Lima, the NKP or anyone else.
EBT Jim posted:Steam locomotives have a speedometer? Have they always had them? How does the sensor/sending unit work?
Of course they do! The 765's original speedo was a mechanical drive from a small wheel resting on the R4 driver tire. The speedo used today is a radar-based speedo identical to what is on thousands of modern diesels.
Dan what trip are you going to book? I'm thinking AM Saturday.
Did any of you riders or Fort Wayne guys see the casino we have in Bethlehem, PA on former Beth Steel property when you were in town in 2015? I haven't been in it yet, but I saw pics of the inside. I don't gamble. They built a nice hotel and shopping mall next door to it. I live just west of Allentown. Atlantic City has a Harrah's. I don't think Trump owns any casinos anymore, they removed his name from the shuttered Taj Mahal, and auctioned off the Trump letters.
Zett posted:Dan what trip are you going to book? I'm thinking AM Saturday.
I am riding the Sunday trip.I will drive in to watch the train pull into Joliet on Saturday afternoon, then walk over to the Chicago Street Pinball Arcade for pinball machine playing fun. Then over to Harrah's casino and hotel for the night and then the fan trip on Sunday. This is as good as it gets for an awesome weekend for me.There is a HO scale model railroad club next to the pinball arcade.I hope they will be open that weekend.

Does anyone know what the consist will be?
If I go, I might pay a visit to the organ at the Chicago Theatre, as I'm not legally allowed to have cocktails.
Brody,
Are you assuming you'll be force-fed drinks at the layover? There will be tea and water also.
Railfan Brody posted:Does anyone know what the consist will be?
Yes.

No.
I'll probably stay for a while and then explore Chicago during the layover.
Still 18+ for engine crew?
Brody,
Yes, unfortunately 18 is the cut off.
The layover is not very long (1.5-2 hours) and the Loop is pretty quiet on weekends. The layover event is sort of the point of the trip as a result. Your best bet would be ride one trip and explore Chicago the rest of the day or weekend.

I'll see if I can stay all weekend, because I'd love to see 765 at top speed. Also, I am aware that Drayton Blackgrove often mounts GoPro's on the locomotive. If he's doing that on this trip, could you have him create some Mark I Video style cab shots? (Camera facing engineer, and same camera position from Horseshoe Curve)
We haven't gotten that far ahead in the planning - it's very low on the totem pole right now.
Hot Water posted:Maxrailroad posted:Is the 765 going to come somewhere near Philadelphia in 2017?
Probably not, due to the VERY long/expensive deadhead move, and the overhead electric wires.
It is not impossible to have the engine operating under wire, Jack. I run trains with GE widecabs and cars as high as multilevel autorack cars and they clear the catenary just fine, so the 765 would be no issue. That said however, as far as I'm aware, locomotives leading a train over Amtrak electrified territory will need to have ACSES (their PTC system) installed onboard, or an equivalent system, which LSLs are the norm.
What is the closest to PA. Cheers Jim
The station users were the NKP, CRI&P and NYC.
NKP 2-8-4 765 pulled the last steam passenger train on the NKP on June 11, 1958 from Chicago to East Wayne Yards and return with a public excursion. Does anybody have photos of that occasion? After its last freight trip from Calumet to East Wayne on June 14, its fires were dropped on June 17. It served in stationary boiler service from Dec. 5 to 7 of 1958 and brought down the curtain as the last NKP Berkshire under steam by the railroad.
CRI&P 4-6-2 938 was the last Rock Island steam locomotive under steam, at LaSalle Street Station, on September 16, 1953. It landed in Enid, Oklahoma for years and finally made its way to the Illinois Railway Museum in 1995.
New York Central steam seems to be a complete mystery............can anybody help with that?
BTW, the NKP 764 color photo on the JOLIET ROCKET advertising occurred on June 30, 1957. The 764 pulled the special from LaSalle Street Station to East Wayne Yard (Fort Wayne) and return.

That seems like a pretty long fan trip! Was it all in one day or was it a two day trip?

Remember, back in 1957 they would NOT have been restricted to 40 MPH!!!!!
