Volume One Issue Number Five

Santa Fe "Bulldog" #1 and #10

The Santa Fe has really gone doggone crazy about diesel power back in the 1940's.

the legendary Hallmark Models to my records was the only importer to ever produce a model of this truly unique locomotive in any scale.

HO was a natural in selection of scale despite Hallmark's devotion to 1:48. Back in 1987 as today HO modelers dominate the market; a sound decision then as it would be currently to produce unique models such as this piece. One of the last models Hallmark imported from KMT of Japan this piece is highly prized by collectors and Santa Fe modelers making it difficult to find.

Innovations like separately applied Indian Heads and factory paint complete with glazing set a standard for the time 35 years ago.

Before and after transformation like a butterfly emerging a sleek Warbonnet from an otherwise drab 1920's era box on wheels. The Division Point "Golden Olive" 1A/1B set used in this shot is another rare gem prized by collectors imported in 2006 and built by Ajin Precision Manufacturing.

The elimination the rear cab and transformation into a series of grills used to cool the mechanicals inside the Bulldog are faithfully captured in this miniature.

IMG_3905

Roof detail is excellent and illustrates well the rows of vents that clutter the roof of the Bulldog

Crews now can rest easier knowing they sit higher in the cab protected from the dreaded grade crossing accidents that killed many crews in early streamlined trains. Also sitting higher reduced the hypnotic effects of the track.

More Brass Scrapbooking fun with some images of an OMI Overland Models Custom Finished Phase I GP30 in Chicago Burlington & Quincy. This late tower drive model is set in a stunning Chinese Red paint scheme expertly crafted just as the prototype was delivered new from EMD marking a new era of railroading for the CB&Q

Another O scale model I really enjoy are W.A. Drake's lovely tank cars.

I jump for these whenever I see them unpainted since I am crazy about UTLX cars. This is my 6th in UTLX in a variety of ranges including 6000 gallon 3 compartment to 8000 gallon 2 compartment versions. This car is a 2 compartment 8000 gallon version imported by my friend Bill McClung owner of W.A. Drake named after his father and built by Wusong Brass Model WBM. Over the years Bill was also invested heavily into his company Red Caboose and more recently he worked at Intermountain Railway Company in Longmont, Colorado. He also was involved in a lot of projects at Precision Scale Co. when they were in California. Bill has recently retired and a well earned retirement I would say. Thank you Bill for some great models; we cherish these wonderful things you have made for us.
