I got tired of trying to get my 45N gateman to work satisfactorily using a TAD and AC power.  It was noisy and inconsistent.  I built the following circuit from this thread: https://ogrforum.com/t...tical-sensors?page=2 and used 12v DC to power the gateman.

This worked perfectly, and for some reason, the solenoid does not get too hot when energized for a few minutes.  The only problem was the anemic lantern.  I removed the lantern from the gateman and installed a 3mm red LED in the underside of the lantern.  I used magnet wire to hook up the LED so his arm could still swing.  While I was at it, I put a light inside the gatehouse.  The LEDs stay on whenever 5v power to the circuit board is present.  The gateman now has a REAL lantern and a light in his house.  I put little felt pads on the door to keep it quiet when closing.  Now the gateman accessory is quiet and has dual IR sensors for operation.  All the gateman needs now is a gatewoman to keep him company.
