The Great San Francisco Earthquake (train photo)

I was hiking near there yesterday. There's a re-creation of a fence that traversed the fault, nearly perpendicularly. After the quake, the fence became two parallel sections, 16 feet apart! And the photo you posted was among the interpretative signs along the Earth Quake Trail at Pt Reyes national monument.

Amazing two Victorian American cities were destroyed within 2 years of each other:  SF, and in 1908, Galveston, TX.

What happened in Galveston, TX in 1908?  I know they had a massive hurricane in September 1900 that basically wiped the town off the map.

Didn't anyone notice the coupler on the front of the loco?

That coupler is link-and-pin.....which legality ended.....when?

There are a couple funky things going on there. The center link seems too low; the boxes on either side appear to be link pockets...but why two? Are they buffers of some type?

Hmmmm....looks like that loco was used to switch dual gauge cars/track.  But those outside coupler boxes (one hidden in grass?) are so far out from the center, beyond what you'd have seen in Alamosa (Colorado)  for standard and 3 foot gauge, that I wonder (and I don't KNOW of any in Calif.) if there was two foot gauge track,  or less, such as a mining road of 18" ore cars, that could have been switched.  Wonder if the derailed cars in the photo were knuckle coupler.

Would this be NorthWestern Pacific / North Pacific Coast territory? There would be some mixed gauge or standard/narrow gauge interchanges somewhere, no doubt.

I'm bad.  It was 1900.  I was concerned about the local flooding.  All OK for my neighborhood.
