. . . is rumored to have originated with the platform runner that was rolled out alongside the 20th Century Limited for passengers boarding at Grand Central Terminal. Whether or not the attribution is true is beyond me, but the daily ritual of rolling it out  is undeniable. Based on that fact, the New York Central System Historical Society has provided the perfect finishing touch for my now 20 year old NYC Passenger Train Display -

Perfect timing in light of all the interest in Lionel's new TCL offerings.

Cheers,

Mike,

Could you provide a little detail on the clear shelves that you have?  Are they glass, etc.

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks to all for your kind comments.

I've written this display up several times here over the years, so I won't take up too much more space now. Suffice it to say that the other two walls are devoted entirely to locomotives, one for Hudsons only, the other mainly to Mohawks, Niagaras and a couple of dreaded first generation diseasels. Anyone who'd like to see more can look about a third of the way down the thread here.

The all caps train name that New York Times (I think) specified back in the day read TWENTIETH CENTURY LIMITED.

The shelves are custom cut 3/16" glass mounted on an aluminum shelving support system I found at Home Depot. Those in this picture are made in three sections each spanning 19 feet end-to-end, and the corner sections are cut to carry Atlas 0-99 curves.

The Mercury set consists of a die cast Pacific and brass cars, all by 3rd Rail. Immediately below it is the Lionel-Smithsonian l 1938 TCL set (2 rail), and the next one down is 3rd Rail's 1941 Empire State Express.

Glad you all enjoyed this.

The original 3rd Rail Mercury set had only four cars. A three car add-on came out a year or two later. I've heard that two more cars were produced after that but I've never seen them.

This is actually my favorite 3 rail passenger set, but the locomotive needs a harmonyards upgrade.

The red carpet found me. I'm a member of the New York Central System Historical Society and one day last fall I got an e.Mail offer from their Collinwood Shop.  Pricey, but I had to have one!  If you're interested, they're still available. Have a look here.
