What does the MECHANICAL motion [pushing down ~ 1/16" or so] DO to cause the ELECTRICAL response? I 1st suspected a micro-switch, so I dissembled the whole thing, but found none. I just can't fathom how the durned thing works!! HELP!!!!

The whole thumbwheel pivots, the switch is not a part of the actual thumbwheel assembly. Look under the tab on the thumbwheel on the main circuit board.
It's probably a hall effect switch with tactical feedback.
Actually, it's a plain mechanical pushbutton switch.
Same with rotation. All mechanical. G
To quote one our MTH techs at NJ Hirailers "the thumbwheel is not your enemy". Thats' one to remember because too much pressure on the thumbwheel will break it.
Thx, Gunnrunnerjohn. I needed that! And I am a bit embarrassed....
And that gives an idea: Why not Superglue a small strip of thin metal across the stress point of that fragile plastic tab. Has that been tried?
Willygee: Great fotos....Thank you! Can you explain the 'operation' of the 'items' shown in your 3rd pic? Do you like my 'strip of metal' [say thin brass stock] idea?

Do you like my 'strip of metal'...probably not as if it got loose there are circuit boards nearby.3rd photo part of the mechanical encoder contact assy.
My plastic thumbwheel bracket broke and I cobbled together a wood shim and hot glued it in place while waiting for a new thumbwheel I had ordered from MTH. Worked great for well over a year (maybe closer to two years), until I dropped the remote and the shim came loose from the hot glue. I finally replaced the thumbwheel with a new one at that time, since I had to open it up again anyway.
Well, I got mine back together. Thumbwheel works perfectly....mechanically. BUT, the ON button now does NADA! No response. I dissembled, checked the removable PCB, all the wiring connections, tested the batteries [1.5 VDC all-around], reassembled. Still no screen response. Suggestions solicited. [Yes, the batteries were installed properly.]
Phil, when that happens to me, often it's the button pad not set right, that keeps the thumbwheel switch from closing. Not always a snap to put together. Or you got glue into it

Been there a couple of times when going back to earlier versions of the software. (not recommended) Anyway a reload of the software might get the screen back .Your scenario is a little different but who knows what might happen? This may sound stupid but try pressing a few buttons any buttons .
What version are you running?
RJR: 4.30.....about which I started a 'bad news' thread last week.
OK, I haven't heard of any remote bugs in 4.30. If it were mine, I'd use a voltmeter wwith thin prods to make sure all 4 batteries are making contact and both ends, and if that failed, go inside and check wires and soldered joints. Would make sure that the "on" botton actually contacts the terminals on the PCB.
I have thumbwheels in stock. G
