After the first one, they do get easier, you know what to expect. Of course, there is always that stinker that comes along.
It does get a bit easier each time...I've done probably 8 or 9 now. Most were empty shells that I added guts to, some were former PS-1, and one Loco-Sounds (which was really easy, although I only upgraded it to PS2 but it used all the same connectors).
However, almost all of them had some *stinker* in them, as @gunrunnerjohn says.
Have fun!

John, Are you referring to a certain Williams Niagara?

That's certainly one that comes to mind! Usually converting an older MTH engine to PS/3 goes pretty smoothly, but there are so many wrinkles with other stuff, especially when you get into brass, all bets are off.
I consider myself to be a senior apprentice engine builder at this point. I've done 1 PS3/2 stacker install in a S2 diesel. It went well overall, nice when the plugs match.
I've also done a couple ERR's, and now a few Lionchief/ Flyerchief retrofits. Haven't tackled a steam engine yet but that will happen one day.
Nice job on your Mallet.
Bob

The graduate course is a full Legacy steam upgrade with whistle steam in a brass locomotive, I haven't done one of those yet.
If we are now talking grad school John, who among us can serve as DMPT (Doctor of Motive Power Tinkerers) to console those for whom smoke has risen in the wrong place(s). After all, smoking is bad for you.
Hello other Richard! It has been a long time sir!

I think virtually anyone that has done enough work on these things has seen some smoke arise from the wrong places! I certainly don't exempt myself from that list, been there, done that, moved on with new parts.
