Hello, I'm new to the hobby. Last Christmas I set up my first O gauge, the Strasburg ready to run kit. This year I expanded it into an 8 foot long dog bone and my kids loved it. This year my father bought my son the Thomas O gauge starter kit and I was looking into getting some more fast track to expand it along with the other engines like James and Percy.

My question is, does Lionel still produce the Thomas & Friends line, or do I have to look around for it at a train show or online?

I know they make the Lion Chief stuff, but I need it to work off a typical transformer.

Did they make the starter set with James or Percy, or only Thomas?

Where's the best place to find this stuff?

Thanks in advance from a rookie!!

Trainworld also has a bunch.  As for control, the LionChief stuff will work off of a typical transformer as well, just set the handle at max power and then use the remote for the locomotive.  Lionel only make the LionChief sets for Thomas and friends now.  If you want the conventional ones, you'll have to hunt around.  You can get Thomas, Percy, James, and Diesel in sets, and there are several freight car add on packs, as well as the iron works diesel twins.  I collected them all last year for my son, and I run them all the time with my ZW-C and with Legacy, TMCC, and conventional locomotives.

Using a typical transformer, you can actually cut the voltage back to limit the top speed and prevent derailments.  The remote has a great built in delay for younger hands but @ 18V the top speed is a bit to much.
