I watched them doing this a long time ago when I worked in Virginia. At least 25 years ago. Now I can't remember for the life of me whether it was on the old Southern RR from Manassas to Charlottesville or of the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac. My work used to take me near trackside on both railroads. Very interesting to watch.
Rail Grinding Video's are some of my favorite. I had not
until now scene these Video's. Many thanks for posting.

I've seen a few. Never saw one in the daytime, just at night. I wonder if that's by chance, of if they only run them at night to avoid more "helpful reports" than can be handled.

Maybe because of less rail traffic at night?

I saw one several years ago on the way back from either the Allentown show or Hamburg. I had it on video on my cell phone. That was about 3 phones ago. Fascinating to watch, and it was in the daytime. Thanks for the videos.

Do the sparks pose a problem with wood ties? Is the train equipped with, or followed by, a "fire control" unit?

Yes.

Yes.
On the last video at end of train is that unit spraying water on the reground tracks. With them bright lights looks like fire. TOM
Well.....if you have never seen one (I had not!) then it is a rather amazing sight.
Never thought about the railhead getting deformed and then have to be recut.
Quite neat, thanks.

I saw one of these at work on the CSX Mountain Subdivision, near Grafton, West Virginia.
Many years ago, before welded rail, I saw one from Speno working on the Lackawanna Gladstone Branch. It only moved about 5 MPH though.
