Seems I just can't complete the last step in upgrading my REV13A version 4.2 TIU. Wanted to practice on the 13A before doing my REV Ls. I've got Barry's book in front of me and have read and watched whatever else I could find on line. I downloaded the 5.0 Consumer loader. Downloaded the 6.1 upgrade. Relatively new Windows 10 computer. TIU is in program mode with the stereo cable inserted. Serial port to computer with USB. Driver installed. TIU power applied after the stereo cable and then TIU to computer connection made. I followed the prompts accurately ( I think ). Problem is when I get to the last step where I am supposed to find the 6.1 download and I click on it, I keep getting the unzip with Winzip box. It's unzipped but I just can't get past this step. I never get to the screen where it shows the upgrade taking place.Sure looks easy when I watch the videos but I must be doing something wrong. Thought I would try the Forum so I could learn to do this myself. After two nights of frustration trying and thinking about this, I'm hoping someone can help cure my insomnia.

your not doing the download correctly. when you unzip the files there should be 2  files but you have to select browse and then install on your desktop. files names are! I'll put them in your ogrforum on the message below ok!

Files (3)
this program download the exe file to crereate the 2 files you need there actuall below
tiu update use this file
remote use this file for remote

ok so when you tell dcs loader to install files say for tiu select tiu6p10.dcst  ok and loader will update tiu to revision 6.10. the when you upgrade remote same way except you have to hold in off but for remote to start update .when  asked which file to use for remote type in or click on remote6p10.dcsr ok then you should not have any problem. when doing tiu may sure to have 3.5 mm stereo cable connected to tiu as directed by dcs  mth software ok!

Ah yes, I missed that.  Just for giggles, I just went through the process (without an actual TIU), and the only other gotcha that I see is where the files are saved when you unzip.  I had to manually change the unzip location to my desktop, press unzip, then use the loader program to point to desktop.  Unzip was putting the files in a temp location - very long file structure...

Ed  you start the loader program 5.0 and then click send file to tiu when loader shows up you have to go  to Desktop and pick tiu tiu6p10.dcst then start loader and it will send file to usb port on your computer and install it in tiu. you have to have power up the tiu with 3.5 mm stereo cable to proto dispatch n other end to proto-cast . you have to have the tiu powered up before you try to start loader, then should start and complete!

Thanks to everyone again!

I bring the Loader Program up on the computer. Program recognizes the TIU through Com  4. Put the audio jumpers back in as I set everything up again according to the prompts. Hit the "send code to TIU " icon.Clicked on the TIU downloaded file you sent me ( thank you ) on  my desktop. Hit "start" on the loader program. Seems I can't get beyond this step as there does not seem to be any connecting between the Loader Program and the TIU file you sent me. A few attempts resulted in a message of TIU File Error. I hate to clog up the Forum with my ineptitude. Marty Fitz has helped me many times in the past but I hate to put more on his plate right now.

I thought i read somewhere that one should delete older loader files off ones computer (the ones before 5.0) before upgrading to the latest one because it can cause issues with the newest one. Not sure about this though.

That's nonsense, the loader or the update files you select in the process are the only ones in play.  Inactive files won't affect you at all.

I've been following here for awhile, before I jumped in.
I purchased a used laptop from Alan Mancus 2 weeks ago with Windows 7 Professional. He was kind enough to also install the DCS loader & the TIU & Remote downloads. I had no issue updating my 2 TIU's to Ver 6.10. I hit a brick wall with the remotes though. The downloads are critical. As Alan suggests, save to your desktop. Thankfully, Alan did that for me. Here are the steps Alan has directed:

  • Open DCS Loader
  • Click YES
  • Turn on power to TIU
  • In Loader Window select
    Options
    Serial Port
    Auto Search TIU
    Click START
    TIU Found
    OK
    System
    Send code to Remote
    Start
    OK
    Open "remote6p10dcsr"
Press & START HOLD KEY (on remote)
    Click OK
    Multiple times if necessary
If successful, the GREEN progress bar will begin & in less than 5 minutes, upgrade will be complete.

    Good luck!

Hi Gunrunner,

I read something here that says;

NOTE: Please uninstall any previous versions of the Consumer Loader prior to installing Version 5.0.

I guess i should've stated "consumer loader", I read that in this page on the MTH website;

https://mthtrains.com/dcs-cons...r-program-version-50

That's the standard "boiler plate" for many Windows applications, but it really doesn't change things.  I had two versions of the dealer loader installed for some time, and a copy of the consumer loader.  I finally nuked the old ones when I was sure that 5.0 wasn't going to choke.  I still have 5.0 of both the dealer and consumer loader installed, no conflicts at all.

Hi Ed,

I think if I had the same issues as you I would have stopped, & actually did when I couldn't update my remotes. I have been running my trains for years with my TIU at Ver. 3.1 & my remote as Ver. 4.2. I would have some minor issues now & then but always felt that when I wired my layout nearly 20 years ago that was the cause. I would have a problem adding an engine or engine not found once in awhile & once I isolated the troublesome engine I was fine.

As I stated above, thanks to Alan & the laptop I purchased from him, & watching the video 6 times, I had no problem updating my TIU's. The remote was my problem. I believe you mentioned that you were able to locate the TIU on port 4, & have the cables connected properly. For ease, the downloads should be located, unzipped on your desktop. My question is, are you able to get to the consumer loader window? See attached.

I am far from an expert, I know its frustrating when you can't figure it out. It was only yesterday with Alan's help was I able to get 3 of my 4 remotes updated after dozens of attempts. I purchased 3 new serial cables & 1 new phone cable & probably didn't need to. I still saved one remote & one TIU un-updated since those are what I'm using on my layout at the moment. I'll probably swap out with an updated TIU this weekend.

In my case I had everything I needed in the beginning & followed the steps correctly but needed one step not mentioned by anyone until yesterday. My computer could locate the TIU when doing the TIU upgrade but was not able to find the TIU to do the remote. I needed to do an auto search for the TIU first to begin. The odd thing was even though I updated one remote, I needed to restart my computer & re-cycle the TIU to update the next.

Although the process isn't overly complicated I think it is a little finicky & sometimes takes multiple attempts. More than one member here has stated that.

Good luck!

Hi Gunrunner,
Thats good to know. I never tried it with the older versions [still on the pc], so I just take the "better safe than sorry" approach.

BINGO!!! I now have two 13A TIUs upgraded to 6.1.

There was a very nice Trainworld MTH tutorial that emphasized the point that when you have the window to unzip the 6.1 files, you should hit "browse" and send it to the desktop ( or wherever you want your file to go ). Once that is done, then you unzip it. Someone I think mentioned something about the "browse" but I didn't pick up on the sequence. Worked great for the TIU. Next I will try a remote or my REV L TIU. Probably be back for more help when I try that. Sometimes it helps to be stubborn!

Thanks to everyone for the help.

I love this Forum!!!

Ed

BINGO with the remote update. Found the remote upgrade in my downloads.Clicked on it and then opened it. Followed the prompts and upgraded 4 remotes and the REV L TIU. Tomorrow I'll see if the system works. Also want to change some engine files. My 2 Premier S2 switchers have very quiet sounds. I'm hoping I can replace them with Railking RS1 sound files which I like and are plenty loud enough. Also want to replace a GP40 file with a GP38 file to eliminate the GP 40 high pitched whistling sound. I'll see how brave I feel tomorrow.

Thank you everyone for your help!

Ed

Yes it does not delete your sound file! well what you want to do if your not sure, always download the engine sound file to your desktop first and then create a folder that says engine ETC so you will remember where u save your engine sound file! then just load a file that you want to try into your engine from mthtranis.com web sight. protosound2.com when sound files finishes loading in engine , engine will automatically start up when download has successfully  installed and is finished

Well that was interesting. Got the NH Proto 3 RS1 file loaded onto my HN Proto 3 S2 switcher. Had a lot of trouble with the REV 13 A TIU. Hooked up the REV L and no problem with the download to the engine. Then things got interesting. I put the track power off and the TIU power off as per Barry's book. Deleted the engine and added it back in. Started it up and with the first click of the thumb wheel  the engine took off as fast as it could go. Seems like I caught it in mid air. I might have to reinstall the original sound file and hope it works.'

Ed

when you start up engine in dcs does the engine sit quiet until you hit startup? if not your missing the watch dog signal on dcs startup! what the engine working normal before you changed the sound file. you know you have to use the same type sound files that has the same wheel arrangement  steam 4-6-2,  4-8-4etc you don't want to go from 0-4-0 to 4 8 8 4! the speed would be way off!

Engine worked fine before the sound file exchange. I thought the sound files between and Proto 3 RS 1 and Proto 3 S2 should be compatible.I hit start up and the sounds come on normally. No lights though. Scroll the thumb wheel forward as usual and the engine takes off full speed. I'm a little aware of the compatibility issue. I did watch Eric's Trains video and he put a Big Boy sound file on a switcher with no problem. Maybe, for some reason, the two files I am working with are not compatible.
