Hello Everyone,

I’ve recently finished my Lionel FastTrack layout after 5 years of construction.  I am an operator & collector for over 30 years.  I am running TMCC Cab-2 and my engines are a mix of Lionel Legacy, Lionel TMCC, Weaver & K-line TMCC.  All have been upgraded to Lionel TMCC or are factory equipped with TMCC.

I recently acquired a K-line Milwaukee Road K-25431 F-7 A-B-A diesel set.   The A-B-A has Lionel TMCC installed from K-line.  All my track and the engine wheels & rollers are clean.  When I get to one or two sections of the layout which is about 18’ by 10’; my Milwaukee Road ABA set just dies.  If I move the engine just a bit, like 1/8” I get the headlights/power back.  Then I start the engine with the keypad and as soon as I throttle up the engine moves literally less then a quarter of an inch and dies again.  If I move the engine a foot or so by hand it will then run again.  I have another dead spot on the other side of the layout that is very difficult to reach which is my other problem.  I do not know if it is a case of losing power or the TMCC signal.  It is driving me crazy.  Do I add additional feeders from my ZW?  I was going to buy one of those voltage boxcars and run it around slowly to just see if I get voltage drops or losses.  I do have other engines like the Legacy Hudson and a Trackmobile that run fine throughout the layout.  I’m reaching out to anyone who might be familiar with TMCC signal situations, power loss, etc. for HELP!

PS:

I also have a Weaver G-5 Gold Edition brass steam engine which has been upgraded to Electric Railroad TMCC with sound and speed control.  This does the same thing but I understand it has a different grounding system and I am told the wheels have to be extremely clean or it stalls.

Thanks in advance,

Craig

TMCC signal loss usually has a flickering headlight. Placing your hand over the engine will correct it. The fact that it's powering down it sounds like a power issue. I'm guessing that this engine being an ABA it has at least 2 powered units. Not familiar with K-Line diesels. Are there tethers connecting the units together ? Is the problem area on a curve ?  The tethers could be working themselves loose. When you move the engine perhaps they are reconnecting. I'm guessing there is only one TMCC driver board in one powered unit if they are tethered. Can you run that one engine on it's own to isolate the problem.

The fact that you are moving the engine slightly. Tells me more that the wheels even though they are clean might not be contacting the rails well enough. Not familiar with Fastrack. Are both outside rails connected to one another ?  Often times with traction tires getting a good connection from wheels to outside rails can be an issue. Especially in 3 rail where there is significant side play to slow running on tighter curves. I had a MTH DL109 that stalled everywhere. A slight jostle and it would be up and running again. Finally after a good break in the problem went away.

My Weaver U25B does the same thing. I did notice where it does it is where the track is not flat on the table which makes me wonder if the roller contacts are not touching the track at that point. If I move it slightly it comes back on and it only does this when the engine is crawling.  My solution was to run the engine a little faster over the spot.
