I have the DCS system and just bought a Lionel TMCC engine that I've successfully set up to run w/ the DCS remote. All is good except the lionel documentation says that in order to control the smoke output of the engine I would enter Aux 1, Aux 2 and 9 on the Cab-1 remote so I tried that sequence w/ the DCS remote and am not getting a way to change the smoke output. Am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation of running tmcc via DCS? Thanks!

I can't help you regarding DCS, but the TMCC keystrokes are actually: AUX1, AUX2, 9 L, M, or H, then AUX2 again to save the setting.
The L,M,H, buttons are the momentum buttons on a TMCC remote, they also select L ow, M edium, or H igh, for the smoke setting.
Yes that's the sequence in the Lionel manual but I don't know which numbers/keys are the L,M,H. I don't have a Cab 1 remote but looking at pictures of one I don't see any keys labeled LMH so I was thinking the DCS lcd screen would show LMH when I pushed Aux1,Aux2,9 but it does not.
What key in the Cab1 remote would correspond with Low, Med, High? Thanks
I'm not sure if this helps, but they are the buttons on the bottom of the remote, normally hidden by a removable cover:
It does. Thanks. I've never had a Cab1 so was going from a picture I saw on the web. Didn't know there were those keys under that cover. I'm now assuming smoke output may be one of those things that can't be changed w/ a DCS remote unless someone else chimes in and knows a workaround. Thanks!
Try just using the DCS Menu system to set smoke levels on a TMCC engine:
Menu/Con trol/Smoke Volume and press the LOW, MED or MAX soft key.
Barry when I tried that it says Check Track after I hit L M or H so I'm guessing it's not working? BTW - I bought your book and checked there to see if I could find the answer prior to posting. Great book!
The Check Track doesn't mean that it didn't work.
Turn off smoke, use the Menu to set it to LOW, wait a few minutes and turn it back on. Then, run it for 5 minutes and observe smoke output.
Repeat the above but set it to HI and see if there's a difference.
I don't think smoke output can be altered on a TMCC locomotive. The L, M and H buttons affect the momentum only on a CAB-1, CAB-1L and CAB-2 remote for TMCC engines.
Now that I think of it, the only TMCC/Legacy engine I have that smokes is a Legacy steamer, and that's the one where I use the DCS CONTROL Menu to adjust the smoke.
Barry you were right on! I was able to adjust the smoke output volume using those steps and although I get the Check Track warning on DCS it did actually adjust the smoke output on the Lionel engine running TMCC. Thanks again!
I'm pretty certain this is not a legacy engine. It's a 2006 Hiawatha engine w/ Odyssey and TMCC but in the manual it says smoke output can be changed so I assumed it was possible and what I just tried did in fact make the smoke value change so happy about that.

This is not necessarily true. There are high end Lionel engines with TMCC that have smart or semi smart smoke units with an ACREG that can accept adjustments as described. It also changes momentum, so after you get the smoke output you want, you go back and change momentum by itself to the desired setting. G
I didn't think it was possible with my Lionel SD40-2 (2001) and my 2 Atlas SD40s (2008). I checked the instructions and didn't see any mention of adjusting smoke level output. Those are my 3 TMCC engines.
I still tried it anyway following the procedures for LEGACY locomotives (AUX1 + AUX2 + 9 + L,M or H + AUX2) just to see if it might work. It didn't.
It's not a big deal since I run my trains with the smoke generators turned off most of the time.
Not ever TMCC engine has the capability. It is newer more expensive Lionel TMCC engines, such as Lionmaster and others. The instructions for the engines with the capability detail how to do it. G
Well, the Atlas will surely not have the smoke regulator, as it's an OEM TMCC setup, those never had the smoke regulators. The SD-40 is too early to have the smoke regulator, so I suspect your analysis of those three engines is valid.
FWIW,Lionels "adjustable smoke output" began being offered about 2005, and started in a few scale steamers. Not every scale steamer at that time had it, and it was not offered in any diesels.
I believe its now standard issue with any scale legacy loco.
Virtually all the Legacy stuff has it, even the inexpensive LionMaster diesels I've seen have the adjustable smoke. I have a few Legacy steamers, and all offer the feature.
