I have had this TPC for about 8 years. It has always had a real good 18 volts. Now it only goes to 16.5 volts. This is the line that I run my Texas Special on and it started acting up all of a sudden so I checked everything and then finally the voltage.

I tried to adjust the TPC up but it will not go any higher than 16.5. Then I turned the Red Knob anti clockwise to lower the voltage and it will adjust to a lower voltage. Then I turn the Red Knob clockwise and it will only go up to 16.5 volts. ?????

Do I need to replace this or ????

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Regardless of the cause, 16.5 volts is plenty to run TMCC/Legacy stuff on. I wouldn't waste money replacing it. If it goes down to single digit voltage then you've got a definite problem.

I've noticed voltage fluctuations on my layout depending on the time of year. Usually during mid summer when everyone has their A/C cranked I might lose a volt.

Having said all that, Ive run TMCC stuff as low as 14vor 15volts coming out of the TPC unit to minimize the arcing two parrallel bricks create during a derailment.

I've long since sold off one brick, and just use one at full voltage. Its 17.6v on the input side of the TPC unit.

Roger,

You might want to check your voltage directly at the tracks to see what the actual delivered voltage really happens to be.  I use the small clamp type Volt Meter from Harbor Freight, to check actual track voltage every once in a while, as Rick O points out it can vary at different times of the year, sometimes more than you might think.
