Been reading all the ideas about holding track down with hot glue, chalk and screws. If i were going to use screws in tinplate track, what pattern do you use, screws in every tie on both sides that has the hole already there? Or stagger holes, or screw down every other piece of track. I`m using foam track bed this time, my old layout was screwed down here and there on a piece of plywood because i was on the road a lot, never enough time to do anything else, that one is history. If i use chalk, will that hold the track to the foam? Seems like using screws would take a lot of time, chalk would be a lot quicker if it would hold. I`m putting a lot of track and switches down this time.

My tinplate track is in like new condition, and i have a lot of it, can`t justify buying buying all new track.

Powdered chalk doesn't adhere to much other than a hard surface. I don't think it will hold two surfaces together.  Caulk in tubes is sold in hardware stores may be better.

Whatever you use, you are building the foundation.  Either do it right or have headaches for the life of the layout.

I have built layouts with tubular track and have found that you dont need a lot of screws to keep it stable.  I usually put only one screw every 3 or 4 sections.  I do try to think about strategic locations like the transition from straight to curve, crossovers, switches, etc.

YMMV

Good advice, thanks...

My tubular  track is on Homasote with no cork road bed.  I think I used #4 screws about 3/4 inch long and like ogauge nut said I might have a single screw every two feet more or less but strategic placement.  No issues and it is simple to do- buy a power screw driver if your layout is big.

Sounds good, thanks...

I use #4x 1" blacked screw for my O gauge track/high rail.  I put them where ever needed to hold the foam road bed in place. Usually one screw every other section of track seems to work pretty well.  I have homasote on top of plywood.  Use more where you think you need it.

I have a bunch of black #4 x 1" that i can use, thanks guys for the help..
