it’s a nice drive in October and I’d avoid the construction zone(s).
You'll probably just find some more on that route.

Johnstrains,
If you are coming up 83 from the south there is a very easy short cut to take that will miss all of the exit in question. Before you get to York take the South George St exit( just past Leader Heights) follow that for a few miles to a left turn on College Ave(York Hospital will be on your right. Take College Ave for about 1 1/2 miles and turn right on Richland Ave. After a few lights(maybe another 1 1/2 mile turn left on to Market St. In about a 1/2 mile the Market St entrance to the Fairgrounds will be on your right. Much easier then trying to deal with the exit in York and Rt. 30. Good luck.

The route Paul described is the one I always took when I lived down in the Baltimore area. Back then, TCA members familiar with it kind of kept that shortcut route a "secret" so it wouldn't become too crowded. Ah, the good old days!
Thanks, Paul. Appreciate the directions.
Will mull over and decide next week. I actually enjoy the ride up 15N, although Rt. 30 is always an adventure no matter the location.
A friend of mine is talking about going to Longwood Gardens (Kennett Sq., Pa.), off
US 1, and east of Lancaster, but said a note regarding the Gardens said "US 30 is
closed", without saying WHERE on US 30 it is closed....any clues?
Brian
what about the return trip is the entrance opposite exit 21 also closed for 83 north ?

Well, that's a serious bit of news; yet,I am wondering how that would affect folks going from Lancaster to York since York is west of Lancaster, not east, as is that interchange between Rts 30 & 83. Am I missing something here?

YIKES!!! I stay in Lancaster for the York meet and travel 30 to the fairgrounds.
Thank goodness someone is keeping us up to date here. I did do that route from Lancaster to York that is South of 30 (can't think of the router number) but it was such a disaster going thru York itself that I now just bite the bullet and go on 30.
Keep us updated!!
thanks - walt
I'm not sure of any of this. If you go to pa511.com and select construction for the Capital Region no construction for Route 30 shows up. The only thing that does appear is construction on I-83 at the Route 30 exit. Even the Wrights Ferry bridge (over the Susquehanna) looks clear and on the webcam it doesn't look like there is anything going on.

Well, I'm glad to hear that news. That bridge could get tedious and a little challenging, so if that stretch is out of my hair (what's left of it, anyway) I am glad to hear it, Chris. Thanks.

Do you mean 462? I did that once years ago when 30 had heavy construction between Lancaster and York. I didn't like it much either. Far too many turns, stop signs, etc. A lot of it seemed to go right down the middle of small residential streets.
It does sound like it will be a big deal for people who love to go to the Round the Clock each day, but for me, my only excursion that far East on 30 is the one day I drive from the TCA museum to York, I will probably just make sure I leave enough time and take my chances with the normal route.
-Dave
Yes, 462 is what I was thinking of.
I didn't mind the lights so much as the completely stopped traffic in York itself - there was some sort of street construction going on that limited lanes to one. That was about 4 years ago I think.
Tried it again the following York meet and it was still the same so I gave up on that route.
Steve, it doesn't look like any problems, other than construction traffic, for exit 21 going north on 83.
Looks like Rt.30 westbound is open all the way to York:
But it looks like part of rt.30 east & westbound between York & Gettysburg is closed for flooding. But that's today from all the rain. It'll probably be cleared before the Meet:
Brian
Thanks for the updates. If I see you at York I'll stop and introduce myself
Steve
Brian,
Thank you SO MUCH for the recent update. I'm relieved to know that my normal route is OK!
see you there!
thanks - walt

Brian, Thank you for your continued effort in being so helpful. I see there is another triangle w/ an exclamation mark in it, but it is designating something between Lancaster and York, along Rt30. Do you conclude it is another flooded area? (I clicked on it but nothing showed.)
FrankM
Walt- I'm a big fan of the 462 shortcut. We're staying in Lancaster too, at LaQuinta. My wife likes the "nearby shopping" (like across the street at Rockvale)
We take 30 then get off just past the Shoe House (just past the Shoe House Road overpass)( never noticed it until a story on HGTV about it, then we looked for it) on the Mt. Zion exit. A left, then a right, the thru town.
Traffic? yes, but sitting on 30 kills me.
Ed
Walt and Ed, I'm at the Holiday Inn Express, at Rockvale Outlets. I travel on RT30, though, even w/ its pain. At least, apparently, that bridge over the Susquahanna is no longer a problem (?)

Frank, if I remember correctly when I clicked that alert you mentioned, it was an accident at that location. Not a long term problem.
This, as I thought, is a temptest in a teapot!! My access to or from US 30 has not been compromised in any way...except by PENDOT's failure to engineer a westbound exit to Memory Lane, Walmart, Sam's Club. cheap gas, etc. Seen sll those signs for Memory Lane going east...seen any going west?? Wonder why? The traffic jam's on 30 do not seem any larger than they have been for years, due to all the trucks trying to avoid the tolls on the parallel turnpike.
