Before the draw down of US Forces in Germany. There used to be a US Base there. Very familiar with the area. 

I thought Germany had its version of PTC?  Was it used on this line?

They were wondering the same thing, apparently the line did have the German equivalent of PTC, but it failed to warn the engineers.

I was looking at the article links in the BBC links.  Seems like this line might had had an older system, like the ATSF ATS, or cab signals.  One article said if the "driver" passed a red signal, a whistle went off, and if the driver did not break, the train would automatically.  PTC would do go into effect a lot faster. Unless something really went SNAFU.

The news article said it was southeast of Munich. 

I was in West Germany in the 1970's with the 11th ACR and they went down to Graffenwohr for tank gunnery practice. So it is southern Germany.

Loosing 8 lives is terrible enough.  Thank Goodness none of the cars tumbled into the river or it could have been even worse.

Note that this accident occurred 09 Feb 2016, but it has been mentioned again in today's newspaper regarding a confirmation of "human error". It appears the signalling system on this secondary line is seriously outdated and lacking in fail-safe protection.

Yeah I never noticed the date, no wonder nothing on the news today... Anyway   have the capability to give a green signal into the block from each ends seems a (to put it bluntly) " crazy."    We have better signalling on our model railroads..

I didn't hear about this at the time it happened. I have some friends in the area, and I just confirmed they were not involved and didn't know anyone who was.

That's the problem with systems like PTC, people think you can make a foolproof system that'll ensure safety happens. The problem with something "foolproof" is that new and improved types of fools are being made every day.

An update appeared on CNN two days ago.  The dispatcher was apparently playing a video game on his phone.
