I looked through this magazine at the news stand and thought it was very informative, but I decided not to buy it because the engine on the cover had that pilot-mounted radiators....a deal breaker for me.

Brilliant.
Same for me! Plus, I found a few glaring technical mistakes, which SHOULD have been double checked by the editor. I put it back on the shelf.
BTW, this is intended to be a good-natured joke. I hope everyone takes it that way, just a little fun.
I have absolutely no doubt of your assessment of the incorrect details you found.
Fortunately for me, thanks to my ignorance I am able to thoroughly enjoy the vast amount of information and images in the magazine even if a few details are not accurate. I guess in my case, ignorance = enjoyment.
Thx!

But, I understand all the locomotives pictured within had disappearing coal load, smoke, sound (although I don't know if the sounds were accurate...) and whistle steam.

Jim Wrinn did stated that all the exposed coolers were gone by 1951.
Found a copy yesterday - overheard a couple of guys at Discount Model Trains in Dallas talking about it as I was checking out with some trees and ground cover. Got the last copy! I really enjoyed reading the magazine - great pictures and very interesting stories. Have new Lionel #4018 ordered. The real deal is just up the road at the train museum in Frisco.

This is my case as well! I can barely tell a steamer from a diesel, and I thoroughly enjoy every minute of it!
