Mr. Henning, I have a copy of the vertical plans to build the internal structure of the train layout.

(1) I was wondering if, in the future, could you post where you placed the blocks to hang the artificial tree limbs on.

(2) Also, you mentioned that you used two trees for the limbs. Do you remember the name of the company that the tree came from as well.

I Thank You In Advance For Your Assistance in My Requests.

Mr. Henning,

The article in the magazine was great! I hope you post a video here as time allows.  My wife asked if we should try this, I let her know it would take up our family room! lol....  She is amazed at some of the projects she has seen in the magazine over time and she REALLY liked this one!

Mike,
I mounted each block one at a time as I added the branches, no particular pattern, just determined by the length of the branch.
The two trees I used were two different trees, one I borrowed from a friend and the other I confiscated from my brother. Don't know the manufactures. Though looking for a couple new ones for a new project is proving tricky, all these new trees have hinged branches.

Since my Wife and Daughters feel that we do not have the time to build this Ultimate Christmas Tree with the Polar Express Set, I will start on building it after the Holidays. This way I can buy the extra tools that I need () to build the tree. Also, I can then take my time in building the same with some modifications.

The first being the tree will be 7 Feet 4 Inches tall, and I will be adding a cork to the roadbed to lower the rumbling noise that the train I am sure will make.  Additionally, having to locate and buy the Department 56 buildings or equivalent, etc. Also, I am also going to see if the RMT Christmas Set that I have with two powered units could make the grade.

Lastly, finding artificial trees that will be utilized in the building of this tree. I will be driving around my neighborhood to see what is being trashed as someone's garbage is another man's treasure.

So, after the Holidays I will be posting my progress in building my version.

Sounds good Mike, we will be looking forward to it.

As I am in the planning stages of my next project I am finding it difficult to find new artificial trees with unlit individual branches, ones that are not hinged. Been to Lowes, Target and a few other big stores. I am trying to avoid on-line because you really need to see them in person to get a good look at the branches. Any reccomendations?

Guys don't forget looking in 2nd hand stores, DAV, Good Will, Yard and Garage Sales. I guess that you guys may have already thought about that one.

As expensive as it is, in the past I've run short adds in the Classified section, for certain items that I was unable to find anywhere else.

Bill, our Club has decided to start building one after the 1st of the year giving us at least until Thanksgiving Weekend to finish for the Christmas Season.

Do you have any plans for the top ring, as well as the crescent shapes through the tree?...........Thanks in advance!.............................Brandy!

Just a thought for another place to look. Around here they have lots of nice artificial trees at the nurseries/garden centers, not sure if they would have what you want? They are usually more expensive at these places than Target, Home Depot, Lowes etc., unless you happen to have some discount garden centers in your area. They usually have pretty good sales after Christmas, but selection may not be so good?

Yes, I have the plan drawn for the top ring, I'll get that posted after the weekend. I do not have plans drawn up for the horizontal track supports, I believe that is what you are referring to by the crescent shapes. I used the track itself to trace on the plywood to cut them out, hadn't drawn them up.

I am excited to let the cat out of the bag some on the new project. I am currently designing and building a new tree for Lionel to use at trade shows starting with the big New York Toy Fair in February. Maybe we'll see it at York. Stay tuned for more info and I'll try to sneak some progress photos (LOL). It's pretty exciting.

Hi Bill, Are the design plans for the tree that you produced for Lionel...the same as the original tree? It just appeared a little smaller in the photos above. I had a first time, but very successful, display this last holiday season and raised $1200.00 for our town Christmas Light Fund and I'm thinking about following your design as a community service project for this year. I have shared the concept with a couple of friends and they were very enthused about helping me with the tree. Paul

The design of the Lionel tree is different from the original tree. The biggest difference is it is designed to come apart in 3 sections. The top lifts off and the main sections comes apart in two big sections. The two sections are on a base, with castor wheels, which has another track loop. All 3 sections then go into their own crates for shipping.

The height is about the same as the original, the top loop is about 7' high and tree top about 9'. The overall tree is narrower though to fit better in the show booth. Also the incline going up the tree is not as steep as the original.

Bill, Did you just compress the original design pattern measurements in order to make the overall tree narrower and the incline not as steep? Was there a change as a result to the overall track specs and placement? Looks as though the new design would make it easier for getting those sections through doorways...Thanks for sharing the updated info.
