Triple Crossing, Richmond VA

Excellent picture within a picture!  I have a slightly obscured view of it from my office.  What a stupid place to put an interstate!

Thank you, Rich.........You really need to take the 765 there.....and stop off and have a pizza at Bottoms Up.....I'm sure I could get our modular group to meet you there for dinner!      The pizza would be on us!

The Triple Cross is a true Richmond landmark! And then there's the little matter of the flood wall too.

One more vote for Bottom's Up Pizza. Their Crab pizza is outstanding.

True, Gilly, but the flood wall is a matter of safety, and doesn't hinder my view of the Triple Crossing the way I-95 does...grrr...

Another vote for Bottom's Up...and have pizza on the upper deck, weather permitting, of course...because cold pizza is okay, but soggy pizza is nasty!

One vote for the BBQ chicken pizza on the upper deck on a warm day with a camera.

One of the ACL/SAL Historical Society mags "Lines South" has a number of photos of the triple crossing taken at different times.  If I can find it I'll scan the photos and post them.

i remember when i was young kid, my parents took us to va beach in the summer

we lived in piedmont va and had to come through downtown richmond (before interstate) to get there

recall driving past it when a steam freight was coming through, pretty cool

had not thought about that memory for years

My son went to VCU for just one semester.  He loved the city but the school did not have the curriculum he wanted.  My older brother went to the arts college years ago but I was just a kid back then. 

Anyway, when we went to visit my son I had a tough time finding the famous Triple Crossing.  The lower level is gone and the highway overhead makes it took quite different than the old photos and postcards.  And I didn't see and NYC fans hanging around. 

I'll have to go back and try the pizza. 

From that map it looks like it is on the east side of I-95.  Is that correct?  I have driven through there many times on my way to/from York but never noticed it.  I will certainly look more closely next time.

Nope, just to the west side of I-95. It is within sight of the train station on the east side of I-95. Heading south, you get off at the MCV hospital exit.

I think the last time the a photo of the Triple Crossing was staged was 1983.

The interstates have certainly impacted composing a photo of this, but the floodwall installed after the 1983 photo was taken has pretty much ruined it.

I went to Bookbinders Restaurant several years ago which is several blocks east of the Triple Crossing. They had pretty much all the photos of the Triple Crossing made through the years mounted on one of the walls of the restaurant. I spent a long time looking through them and comparing the changes in the area from one picture to the next.

Nope, the lower level (former Southern Ry. now Norfolk Southern) is still there.
