Absolutely CORRECT! Virtually ALL full tonnage trains despatched westbound out of Cheyenne, prior to the completion of Track 3 in about 1953, required doubleheading. The "road engine" being a 4000 while the helper on the front was either another 4000 or a 3900 class Challenger.
I wondered about the same thing; i.e., double-headed Big Boys. I found a painting and a picture of just that, and also an article that mentioned double-heading but only with a gas turbine:
