I followed all the directions and I am using a serial port to usb cable and my computer comes up with a critical message no serial port on this computer. What do I do or did wrong.

I'd suggest that you start by installing the driver for your serial to USB cable.

If you were local, sure. 
You're best bet is to just find a PC-literate friend to assist you.
I can help you tell me what kind of computer you have brand name desktop or laptop model number of computer and whether your using windows 10 windows 7 and I will walk you threw the computer I sell computers and can install 7 or window 10 versions and will work with mth trains! send me an email and ill guide you threw your issues ok!
