And then this happened.......................

Ok for starters I run my trains using the DCS Commander. I wanted to update some engine sound file as the ones installed in my engines is outdated. So I went out and got a brand new TIU thinking that is all I needed to update the files since people say you don't need the remote to update. After hooking everything up (DCS loader 2.3, z1000 to fixed1 and a z500 to power the TIU) I get an error, can't find the engine. So after many tries, changing test tracks and power supplies ( I have not tried DC Power yet) don't change the usb cable as the computer can find the TIU, I decided to buy the remote to use with the TIU. This is a used remote but is update to version 4.2 this is were the problems started. Added the engine to the remote and TIU, tested the engine on the test track all went well, did a signal test got 10, checked battery etc........ all ok. Went to do the sound file update and still get can't find engine. Now with this being a new TIU I figured it would be up to date. I tried to check what software version it was running and I got A Check Track message. I went back to the engine, did another signal and battery test etc............. went back to check the software version and got Code Version and nothing there was no number saying what version is in the TIU just a equal sign on the screen. Then the Check Track message again. I do another signal test and the engine starts making this LOUD beeping sound, like I just broke into a bank vault, louder than a smoke alarm. It woke everybody in my house up as I could get it to stop. E-Stop button don't work. Shut of all power and turn it back on it still was making the noise. Turn it all off again, after about a minute ( and everybody coming down to see what happened) The engine came back on silent, no noise no engine head lights. Pressed the start up key and got nothing but the headlights came on very slowly and I could move the engine with the remote, horn and bell work, station announcements work, just no engine sounds and no sounds on start up or shut down. So I decide to see if I can get what version software the TIU is running I get Check Track again. I go and move the engine back and forth and the test track and go back to check the version and the remote shows TIU Code Version X. After seeing this I turned everything off, took the engine over to my Wonderful DCS Commander to do a feature reset on the engine and got all my sounds back. So all of that I'm stuck, I don't know if this is a remote problem (since it is use) or if this is a TIU problem, It is new REV L. TIU,     Walthers hobby store were I got the TIU said this is a new batch they got in march 2013. I got the last one. The remote was brought used from Trainz.com. I can't do anything until I find out what version software is on the TIU. I also need a dc find a good dc power supply. But if I to go threw all of this to change sound files, Then I'll just stick with my DCS Commander. I don't know if I even want to hook it up to my layout if is making one of my engines make loud beeping noise on a test track.

Hi all,

Cta Howard, it doesn't sound like there is anything wrong with your remote.  The problem is most likely with the TIU.  From your description I think it is possible or even likely that this particular TIU has the wrong firmware.  Download the 4.20 firmware from www.protosound2.com and perform an update to the TIU.  Once the TIU has been updated, try reading the TIU firmware version from the remote and report back.  If you get a proper reply (TIU code = 4.20), go ahead and try loading a sound file to an engine.

No, they did not.

However, one could have back-leveled a Rev. L TIU with any earleier version of DCS. Not exactly a smart thing to do, however, it's quite do-able.

That's kind of my thinking on this.  The TIU might have been loaded with 3.11 to correct the AIU bug and was never upgraded back to 4.20.  If a dealer had a dozen or more TIU's in stock they might decide to update them all at once.  I can easily see a TIU getting missed among a stack an getting re-boxed without getting updated back to 4.20.

Thanks Dave and everyone else for your input. Problem solved and Dave was right. Remote now shows TIU Code Version 4.20 and I have updated 2 of my subway engines in ten minutes. I figured the TIU should have already been updated since the hobby shop told me that this was part of a shipment they got in march 2013.

Thanks again, I'm sure i'll be asking more questions on the full system as I switch out the DCS commander.
