When I was a member of the BERgen Co Model RR club, one of the members had this contraption. It's great for tinplate track. The issue is the cost and number of uses. IF you are constantly building and tearing down layouts, and using tinplate track, ITs Great and a much needed tool for better connections as well as a real timesaver. IF you are an occational layout builder, I would see if one could be rented out, otherwise you just have an expensive mantlepiece collecting dust.

It is my impression that there are two styles.

I have one that uses a knob with a threaded shaft to tighten the jaws against the track's rails. Then you use a lever to either assemble or disassemble the track.

I believe there is another version that has a level (with a cam?) to tighten the jaws against the tracks rails.
Can anyone confirm this?

I picked mine up second hand, and have not updated my track plan since. So I have not tried it.

I've tried using the ties to pull track together and experienced the ties pulling loosefrom the rails. I found that with new Lionel tin track I just needed to push a track pin (I made a tool with a pin for the purpose) into each rail and then the track was easy to join. Gloves help too.
