Here are some photos of the new TW Design/ TW Trainworx Base for the Lionel Grand Central Terminal. It was delivered the day before Thanksgiving from their factory in Texas in a Crate marked FRAGILE. After making the obligatory CHRISTMAS STORY movie FRA-GIL-E and leg lamp jokes, we opened it up and found an absolutely beautiful and detailed piece of Model Railroad art.

I met the designer, Roger Farkash and his wife Dorcie at the Spring 2014 York and asked if they would be interested in doing a base for the GCT similar to the one they had created for the Lionel exhibit in Grand Central Terminal in New York. They were very nice to work with and after a few emails we got in the production schedule. They finished the base in mid-November after returning from New York where they installed this year’s Christmas displays at Grand Central Terminal and Macy’s. Everyone I dealt with at TW Trainworx was very professional. I received regular updates and they responded quickly to my email inquiries. In spite of the relatively small size of my project, they treated me as if I were as important as their large clients. I couldn’t be happier about the experience and the new base. Dorcie told me that they are considering placing this item into regular production. If you have the Lionel Grand Central Terminal and are interested in the base, I recommend you contact them while this is still being considered.

That is neat and makes the terminal complete. I recently purchased one of the large TW Design Terminals from a dealer but unfortunately it had cracks in the finish and other flaws. I have since returned it but would consider purchasing another one if I could live with the price. Can you share the price of the lower concourse module, either here or at my e-mail at PaulEFudd@hotmail.com

Thanks.

Brian,

Your layout was the first thing to come to mind after seeing this base in person. It would be a great match. Your layout has the scale to really support the integration of this base.

Thank you for the testimonial Emile! More importantly, thank you for talking with us at York and expressing your desire for this base to be made... that's what we thrive on, train nuts dreaming of what would look cool on their layouts and turning our Chief Traingineer, Roger Farkash, loose and gettin 'er done

I will be posting a Traindame *Steal-of-a-Deal later today for our latest product offering... TW TrainWorx Custom Base for the GCT! Price will include the shipping crate and shipping so Paul... I guarantee the price Emile was quoted is a once in a lifetime price!

Thanks again!

Two questions -

While I own the GCT issued by Lionel last year, it didn't fit into my NYC cityscape motif (doing an El line and Park Ave./ 5th Ave. type buildings - and no skyscrapers) - so it sits in its unopened box.  Am in the final stages of my cityscape planning and after seeing this base I'm now considering rearranging the cityscape a little to include - if this base becomes available at a reasonable price. So my two questions: 1- what are the dimensions?  2- where is this "deal" to be posted?    Thanks.

Peter,

  1. The dimensions are approximately 26” x 39” x 5” tall with a 1 ½ inch sidewalk around the base. Total dimensions 29” x 42” x 5”.

  2. I received this mass email from Dorcie earlier this afternoon with the offer for the base. I don't want to break any forum rules so I'll forward it to your email.

Duly noted

Hooray!

Frankly, I think that smaller GCT you made for Lionel is one of the hottest, best, and most creative products ever offered in model trains.

Instead of folks spending tons of money to buy 3, 4, or 6 MTH Banks to kitbash Penn Station...heh, that money could go to TW TrainWorx!

And we would all be happy!

Please...Please...please...

Chipset,

You hit the nail on the head. That's just good business advise. The large GCT base has a limited potential customer base of 250. 249 after my purchase. With each additional purchase, the potential customer base decreases. Eventually, TW Trainworx will have to offer price reductions, discounts or rebates to gather additional sales. The small GCT base doesn't have these restrictions.

It's amazing to me just how much good business advice presented in these threads goes unnoticed by manufacturers. The companies who do take note have been quite successful. Sunset/Third Rail took note regarding the "Train of Tomorrow" and now are on the verge of delivering the best train of 2014.

My experience with TW Trainworx is that they do listen to their customers. I think they are uniquely poised to offer some really great products to large groups of model railroaders...and all their products are "Made in the USA".

Great advice Chipset! I'm sure Dorcie is listening.

That is some nice work. The base really adds to the GCT!

But as a New Yorker I'm a little confused... What's with the taxi road circling around the top of the base? The real GCT has no road there. ??? To be more accurate the base could have been smaller in size to match the dimensions of the existing GCT model, be more prototypical and have a smaller footprint.

Not to take away form the excellent craftsmanship and great look of the piece. But so much work was done to be accurate to the prototype, then there's that road... ???

i would certainly be interested in a base for the smaller GCT because it would lift it up enough.  i might have to reengineer the town a little, but that is possible.

When I first received it I felt the same way.

However, as it turned out the location of my station was so narrow, that my Lionel GCT was the only station that looked good there.

I also made a base for it, which makes it seem much larger.

Moreover, it has grown on me big time, I like it so much I actually thought about buying another one to represent my Chicago location in lieu of anything else available.

if TW TrainWorx, was to make a smaller version Penn Station and Union Station, I would not only buy both, but probably 2 of each!

That's Park Avenue and it is most definitely there. At least it is on three sides. The road in the back of the GCT base is a matter of artistic license, although there may be an indoor garage/drop off alley at the actual Grand Central Terminal.

Isn't that upper level roadway actually called Park Avenue Viaduct while Park Avenue runs at ground level?
