Two train control, conventional equipment

I am building a layout with one large oval with a siding. I want to run two trains in opposite direction, have a train go into the siding and stop, throw the switches to the opposite track and start the other train around the loop to return to it's first position and stop. Have this run automatic continuous? Is there a control I can purchase or build to do this?

I remember seeing a plan for something like that using insulated rails. I think it was in an old Lionel instruction book from the 1950's. I'll look at home tonight.
