I started by ordering a 1/48 scale Abrams tank. I ended up getting a 1/35 scale by mistake. The seller made good on it. I figured I should make some flats in both of my layouts anyways. So I dabbled and bought more 1/35. I couldn't find much more in 1/48.

I got some FOV tanks that are 1/32 scale and will look even better. I think I've got the bug.

 Then, I ran across this:

so the pile is growing fast:

I acquired several of the old Shaffer "stompers" from the bay. They make reasonable military loads. An Atlas or Weaver 50 foot flat can hold three of them! I painted two flat cars in Pullman Green and used an old walthers set of military decals  for U.S. Army and DODX for my military train! I used the pullman green instead of olive drab because my Weaver RS-3 letteedr for the Army was painted in pullman green as well as the Weaver caboose!

Hey Joe...I bet my Sherman can beat your Abrams:

At 1/6 scale this beast is 4 feet long!  Not an easy piece to lug around.  I think that's why I'm into O scale now

There's a 1/18 scale Tiger behind the Sherman and to the left.

My British uncle was a Brit tank commander in WW2.  He said EVERYBODY shoots at you no matter if they can make a dent or not

I have tied down so many Humvees, M1A1s, Bradleys and other vehicles that I still see them rolling onto DODX flats in my nightmares from time to time, even after all these years. I was the Battalion master Driver officer, so i had to be rated on everything our (Heavy Mech, then transitioned to the very first Stryker unit) Brigade had. I even did a drag race against the shop officer in my motor pool once. I proved that off the line, an M1 will leave a Bradley in the dust...

I had someone ask me for advice how to correctly represent a tied down Sherman on a flat car for someone with a live steam layout. I sent photos and copies of my WW2 TMs for rail movements. I was told that they had a dozen of these things put onto flat cars for a public event. I never got photos back (typical, people ask advice then i never even get a thanks for my time) but I'd have loved to have seen that. I dabbled in 1:6 scale stuff for a while but I have since limited my WW2 stuff to either what can fit on my On30 layouts or the 1:1 scale stuff in my collection: http://www.quorumoftwelve.com/...php/topic,157.0.html

It really is a bug. Or, maybe its a virus lurking around in each of us.

I had no intentions of a military load train ... but the 'bay had some of those Tamiya 1/48 US tank destroyer kits cheap, and I couldn't resist. Time for some Weaver flatcars.

Cool loads, for sure.

Vaguely related .... a new WWII tank movie comes out next month I believe ... "Fury" ... looked pretty cool ....

4' long?

how much does she weigh? does she run?

very nice!

I thought I saw at least, most of your videos. Somehow I missed this one:

I like the Key Es video. I'm a sucker for sound so I prefer the 3rd rail ones (of yours).

I should have grabbed the 3rd rail NYC Es when I had the chance. I'll was waiting for an updated MTH 2 rail version that now, may never come. Seems they're pulling back on two rail releases. An updated truck for the Es will be probably be out of the question?

Wow Bob, is that Sherman one of the Dragon Models?

I have a couple of curio cabinets full of 1/6 military miniatures.  I've got a lot of the earlier Dragon stuff, 21st Century, plus a bunch of stuff that I've put together over the years by mixing and matching accessories from various manufacturers.  I have a lot of airborne guys on display, along with plenty of huns for them to shoot at.

I have one of the 21st M3 Stuarts downstairs, along with Kelly, Big Joe, and Oddball displayed with it.  Wrong tank, but it works.

Jerry

That 1/6 Sherman was a James Desimone roto-mold tank he offered back in the late 90s.  It was very basic and some of the parts like wheels and bogies had to be redone/scratchbuilt by me, the tank treads were from another vendor Steve Hoeger.  It probably weighs in at 25-30 lbs, it's more awkward to carry than heavy.  It does roll but I never put a RC unit inside but I did put in seats for the 5-man crew.  The turret sits on a 12" lazy susan ball-bearing turntable to give you an idea of how big it is.

If you think our 1/48 scale trains take up room try housing a dozen or so of these 1/6 vehicles, you see in that video they're in a field at a guys "manor" in England, the detail on their vehicles is first rate (they have access to actual drawings and vehicles).  Jerry, I also have one of those RC Stuart tanks, actually 2, one I converted to a M8 HMC Scott (Howitzer Motor Carriage).

Lets' just say I have enough 1/6 figures to stage a coup or invade a small country, most of them are boxed up now but I have all my tankers and pilots on display on lower shelves in the train room.  Military stuff has always been a part of me, my parents and their siblings all took part in WW2.  I even have a figure that looks a lot like my dad (9th Air Force).

I thought I had a pdf manual showing how they secured tanks and vehilces on flat cars but I can't seem to find it, probably on a CD I made.

I bought from these guys in the past www.hobbylinc.com and do a search for 1/48 scale armour there is a lot of it, but they are all model kits.
