My new penn k4 will uncouple for no given reason while it is moving. I believe TA recommended putting a capacitor accros the two coupler power leads. anyone know if this is the fix for a legacy engine and what value cap do you use. this is the first time with a lionel engine to do this. the knuckle just opens up. any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance for advice.

I believe the capacitor is already installed on Legacy engines. I would unplug the coupler and see if it still opens up. If it does it is a mechanical problem if it doesn't then it's electrical and a call or email to Lionel would be a good idea.

Ron is correct, apparently the Legacy locomotives have the protection, and I was advised that adding a cap may damage the Legacy electronics, so I recommend against it.
for what it is worth I had this problem on a 2000 year Lionel. I added .001 capacitors to all the switches. 2 per switch, from the switching terminals to the common. ( the one with the metal pad on my switches). If you have a lot of switches just do this to the ones that trains normally run over.

mine did not necessarily uncouple on the switches. If you watch the cars go over the switches you will see sparks. These sparks can cause Radio Frequency interference.

My first step would be to unplug the coupler from the board and run to see if this is a mechanical issue. If so, it will dictate a totally different fix than capacitors.

IMO; Run the loco by itself with no other trains/locos running and see if it still does it and where it does it. With the coupler hooked back up of course. Don

Can mean mechanical. Remove the rivet and stretch spring or get new coupler. G
