I've read and agree that it's important to get the track work correct before adding much detail. To that end, I've been working on my Boston Union Freight trackage and wiring for some time now, though I haven't automated the switches yet with NJI switch machines. I have a couple uncoupler magnets built into the track but I have not found them to be operational enough to use for truly hands off switching. I have a couple structures but many just blocked in to make sure the trackage works around the buildings.
