Looking at Google maps I can see a ghost outline of a huge hump yard west of Cheyenne. I can't find that much on it via the web. Whats the story behind this? Not an inch remains but its amazing how the footprint is still clearly visible.

You must be seeing things as the UP didn't have any "hump yards" wast of Cheyenne, except for maybe Ogden Utah. Buford, as I remember, was a coal and water facility on Sherman Hill.
Was is now the key word for Buford. Makes for a nice drive though to detour off I-80 to see the monument and where the top of Sherman was.
I meant it had the footprint of a hump yard. Must have been a big coal yard...when was it closed?
