I picked up at a garage sale, for the princely price of $10!!, a 718 (?) Railway Express Agency car, a 42597 log car, a lighted caboose, a bunch of track and an original 4801 set box. Dusty but in great condition all (except for the set box that is shopworn and musty smelling).

My question is about the Railway Express Agency car. It is red with absolutely no markings, and it does not appear, after careful examination, that there ever was any. Link couplers, red mailbag. I can't find another like it on EBAY.

Thoughts anyone?

Mostly for curiosity, is the chassis plastic, die cast or sheet metal? Is the pickup an outside sliding arm or is it between the wheels?

My opinion is the car was originally stamped but the stampings are worn off. It is surprisingly easy to remove the white lettering with common cleaners and leave no trace. Unlike Lionel, Gilbert did not use a heat stamping process which left visible imprints in the plastic.
