Lionel item# 6-14098. Can someone tell me why the lights on the gates don't always flash and alternate? I never had a problem before and my connections look fine. The gates go up and down without fail. Thanks.

Just thought I would ask again and see if someone else experienced the same problem...?
If you are talking about the Lionel FasTrack Crossing Gates, the red lamps on the gates do not light or flash. They're just there for decoration. The only flashing lights are the ones on the Cross Bucks themselves. Each Cross Buck has a pair that alternately flash.
I just looked up the item number you gave and they are the same gates as I mentioned above, but without the built in track and roadway. Still, the gates themselves work like the fastrack ones, I believe, the lights on the gates do not flash. Only the Cross Bucks flash.
I think this is the item in question
Lionel illustrated the gate/bar as having flashers but in actual production they didn't Same held true for the Fastrack version also.
Yes, that's the one! And, the lights always flashed.
Charles, These accessories tended to have issues. Try raising the voltage slowly to see if it will start flashing. I have one that won't flash anymore over a certain voltage. The other issue is that the gate may strip the gearing, and soon it doesn't move up and down very well. Not much you can do inside these units. Unfortunately at $99 not the most reliable device considering the cost. G
Thank you all for your replies.
The units contain solid state electronics. Make sure you protect them from voltage spikes when installing.
