Finally decided to update both dcs (3.1 version) handhelds/TIU to 4.2.  This systems is about 10 years old and runs fine. I've been hesitant to take the leap given the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" mentality.

In any event, after downloading the 4.2 version on my Macbook Pro and attempting to run it, all that appeared was a bunch of hieroglyphics.  Did I miss something when attempting to download this, i.e., not doing so in Windows perhaps?

Incidentally, I just ordered the DCS Companion, book version, maybe this is covered in the book?

Thanks for any insights.

Bill

You have to run the DCS loader in order to update your DCS system.

I strongly recommend you read the update chapter in Barry's book about updating, because there is an optional cord that you probably don't have for updating the TIU, and another for updating the remote.

Specifically, you'll need a stereo 3.5" male to male jumper cable, any size will do, it only has to go about 3 inches.  For the remote, you'll need a four pin telephone handset cable, the kind that goes from the phone to the handset.

Also, you'll need to connect the TIU to your computer with a serial cable, so you need the means to do that as well.  If your computer doesn't have a serial port, you'll need a USB <-> Serial adapter.  Also, the loader is a Windows application, so you'll have to use a Windows emulator like Parallels to run it.

Are we having fun yet?

Bill,

John's pretty much got it right and, yes, you most certainly will find everything you need in my book, to do what needs to be done in a Windows environment.

You'll need to establish a Windows environment on your Mac (MacBook Pro's are Intel based so can run Windows). I've tested the process on my own Macs using both Apple's Boot Camp and Parallels product, both with Windows 95, and both work fine. I've also heard that VM Fusionware works, as well.
