I am trying to update a sound file on a loco. I have an older version TIU with the serial port. My current computer does not have a serial port. Is it possible to use one of the usb ports to load the sound file??

I’m not familiar with the product you have, but searching on ‘usb to serial’ gives a lot of hits. The big online retailer has many to choose from. I think I used one many years ago to talk to an old, old printer for a specific purpose.
Update: Thinking about it I may have used a parallel to serial port converter, it was that long ago. Still, this should work.

I bought a usb to serial port converter from Amazon years ago and use it for all my upgrades. The last time was a about 6 months ago to clone a new remote with my tiu. I used a new laptop and everything worked fine.
I have the adapter cable but the program error reads that the com port is in use by another program . I have closed all other programs running on the pc. Could it be that this cable is usb 2 and an updated cable is needed?

My cable is at least 10 years old and I used a new laptop. The fact that mine is likely a usb 2 (or even earlier) was not a problem for me. Also, I’ve never gotten that error with any of the laptops I’ve used previously. I vaguely recall others discussing that error years ago. Try using the search function and see if anything materializes.
Maybe some specifics, what exact make/model of cable, and the version of Windows you're using would be a good start. I've used several different brand USB <> Serial adapters for upgrades and never had an issue.

If memory serves correct: in the MTH software, you need to manually select the port every time you are using it elsewise it will throw this error.

Nope, I just plug the USB<>Serial adapter in, power up the TIU, and fire up the MTH Loader.

Whoops! I am confusing it with Keil uVision5. Thats pretty embarrassing...
looked at my control panel on the pc and it indicates the serial adapter pl2303 chip was phased out 2012, So it appears perhaps i need an adapter compatible with windows 11 (maybe usb3)
I have seen that error happen on occasion on a friend's computer when trying to do sound file installs. His machine has Windows 10. A restart of the computer usually made it work correctly. Something in the background was "using" the port and the restart cleared it.

I had to get a new USB to Serial adapter when I upgraded to Win11 - old one wouldn't work anymore. I found a message in device manager.
This one has been working: Amazon.com: Gearmo USB to RS-232 Serial Adapter w/LED Indicators Windows 11 Support : Electronics

On this Win10 machine, I have a real dual serial card, so I only use the USB adapter on my Win10 laptop now.
All my motherboards in my computers still have a serial port header on them. I just bought the ports from amazon and plugged them in.
