Alright, being born clear back with rotary phones and party lines, I am what I would call high tech computer illiterate. I have updated a TIU and Remote some years back. Another gentleman came to me and ask if I could update his. Well I tried and ran into this, I am stumped do to my extensive lack of knowledge. Is this something that can be over come with a little bit of guidance from one of you computer wizards or should I just tell him to send it in.  This is the message I get.

Verify the COM port your computer is using to communicate with the TIU. If you are using the USB port on a REV. L TIU, verify which com port appears in your device manager when you connect the TIU.

In the loader program, you can set it to Search or specify which exact port you want the software to use (because you know that the TIU is connected to that port). The search method takes longer and can sometimes confuse the program when it locates another device on the wrong COM port.

Yes, that sounds correct. Windows 11 had stricter drivers requirements and so sure- a lot of external devices had problems.

You might have to just try a newer serial adapter. I use this Tripp Lite one

Updating the serial adapter worked for me a few weeks ago when Windows 11 issued the COM3 error. DigiKey USB to 9 pin cable worked flawlessly thereafter. Forgive me, also being party line age and technically challenged, I don't remember where I obtained the serial adapter update!

Anyone know of a USB 9pin cord brand that will work with 11? Some I’ve looked at say they do but reviews say other wise.

The Tripp Lite USB - Serial adaptor that Vernon listed above is fully compatible with Windows 11 (22H2 certified). Tripp Lite also has a support page to download the driver if you want but this adaptor uses the Prolific chip which should have built-in support from Microsoft.
