Just acquired a LIRR Lionel camel back72-87843-250 designed to run on conventional and includes basic rail sounds. The manual discusses upgrading both the rail sounds board and also adding TMCC to the package.

As I only run conventional with no plans to go to command control I was wondering if there would be any advantage to these upgrades (if the boards were still available) for use in conventional. Prior discussions on the list have said that putting in ERR boards often improves conventional operation.

If you add the new ERR RailSounds kit, you'd probably get improved audio over the existing board.  As to whether the cost of the kit and the labor to install it would be worthwhile, that's a different story.

If you were to add a Cruise Commander, you'd get cruise capability, again I don't have experience with them in conventional mode, so I can't say how much better they'd be than just running it with the basic E-Unit.
