Use of adjustable resistor to power led lights

Can I use an adjustable resistor to power a 12 volt led lamp when 16-18 volts ac are coming from a ZW transformer? If yes, what amount of ohms and watts should be the rating of the resistor and where can I obtain one. If this is not the correct way to power the led, do you have any suggestions?

1/4 watt 300 ohm resistor would be fine.
